This books uses mainstream media misinformation to make key points. I'm only 23 pages in, on the hardcover, and its become apparent that the author is an anti-Trumper. It's a much larger book, at 540 pages + than I expected as I had not checked the number of pages in the book prior to purchasing it. The author is from the UK.

Kaufmann does a fine job of offering a historical examination and prognosis of an entire race of people from the disinterested lense of someone that is not a member of the group being examined (Kaufman is Chinese, “latino,” and Jewish).

Provocative title, but I am reviewing this page. There is absolutely no description of the content of the book and one anonymous review. If this is any indication this book is empty.

Excellent read on a complex topic. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I read the parts I was interested in and found it useful as all the LP books are. Nothing unusual here, just a good guide to a neglected corner of the world.

The book does not really give sufficient information about the villages which are, in fact, memorable experiences. Nonetheless, I am not aware of a better source for information about places in PNG and so recommend that someone traveling to PNG buy this book. There are a few other good books about the culture and art.

The reviews below have been transfered from the 2006 edition, probably because the authors haven't changed. However this is a mistake. Lonely Planet did listen to customers and the book is now over a 100 pages longer and contains much more information on all regions of PNG and the Solomons. Sure, it's still not what it was when the countries had seperate guidebooks, but now the PNG part is almost as complex and the Solomons are getting there - the section is almost twice the length. So now this is quite a good guide for PNG at least (haven't tested on the Solomons). The advice is very useful as media coverage of PNG is generally only bad and quite false and the listings seemed accurate. As this is the only guide to PNG it probably doesn't need recomendation, but at least now you can buy it knowing that the new edition IS useful!

Once upon a time, Lonely Planet had a good guide to Papua New Guinea (371 pages), and an excellent one to the Solomon Islands (279 pages). For better or worse these fascinating countries don't exactly attract hordes of holidaymakers, so after leaving those books unupdated for many years, the publisher has now decided to dump them together in this new edition (272 pages).The result is basically a new, much slimmer guide to Papua New Guinea, with fewer than 30 pages on the Solomons (where it only actually covers half the country even nominally).Not only has much of the detail been thrown out, the quality of information has also gone downhill sharply! :-(The authors have very obviously never visited even major tourist destinations of PNG described in the book - as confirmed by owners of accomodations included in it, who told me they had merely received phonecalls from the author who didn't even visit most of the Sepik Region or the Highlands, for example!Much of the "updating" seems to have been done by surfing the web, and as a result the book abounds in recommendations for expensive, upmarket places and tour-operators that do have websites, while completely ignoring cheaper, budget guesthouses which have no info on the net. Even excellent, small locally owned places that were in previous editions of the PNG guide are conspiciously missing! And as for what the authors consider "budget": their itinerary recommended for budget travellers includes staying at a 150 USD/night resort!This book is a real shame to Lonely Planet.If you are planning on resort-hopping on a short holiday, it will be sufficient, but if you want to explore these two countries in depth without spending a fortune, you are far better off trying to find copies of the now out-of-print old editions, which still contain far more useful information than this new guide.Check Amazon for reviews and availablity of the old Papua New Guinea guide and Solomon Islands one.Another cheap little book that may well enrich your travels in either of the two countries is LP's Pidgin Phrasebook.Those keen on getting way off the beaten track in PNG on foot will still find Bushwalking in Papua New Guinea invaluable!

I bought this book hoping it would be helpful for the Solomon Islands. There was only about 30 pages about the Solomons. This book is a great guide for Papua New Guinea. I would suggest looking for older guides. I bought an older guide from lonely planet that was strictly about the Solomon Islands. It was much better, only the finacial info was definitely out of date.

Blue Hat, Green Hat was in a stack of new books I purchased for my granddaughter's 2nd Birthday. Since she knows her colors and her clothing, I wasn't sure if she was going to enjoy this book more than once or twice, but it's a Boynton so I gave it to her anyway. She not only enjoys it, after I read it to her twice I heard her "reading" it to herself! She didn't miss a thing! I love the way the author included animals, clothing, colors and a twist at the end! Sandra Boynton has such a gift for teaching our littles, they don't know they are being taught, to a little it is all entertainment! I wonder what she could do with High School Physics and Chemistry?I would recommend this book for any family library. It's a book that can be read to the very youngest, the pictures are clear and the "slip ups" of the turkey are hysterical - Oops! Sheer genius!

This is a fun little book, fitting right into the canon of Boynton's other books. The text is quite sparse, the illustrations simple and funny.I would note that we've found with this book, to really engage our son, the reader has to do a lot of work! Because the text is so sparse, we've had to embellish it a bit with explanations--explaining what the turkey continues to do wrong when trying to get dressed, like his friends. I don't mean this as a criticism, though--it's actually a compliment. It lets the reader be an active participant in the book, engaging the child with dialogue that, hopefully, leads to learning and interest.Also, you'll find yourself saying "oops!" a lot when you find what the turkey is wearing, almost always incorrectly. You'll be surprised at how many different tones of voices, inflection, volumes, etc. you can use with the word "oops!"

It's a cute book that goes through the alphabet with different animals. There were a couple letters that I thought were ridiculous and didn't make sense, but the rest are sweet, some are funny.The book is small enough for my toddler to hold and turn the pages. Durable for how rough she can be on her toys, too.It will be great for when she starts to learn the alphabet. It's a nice way to start getting her familiar with their shapes and sounds.

Oops! Is the favorite part for our kids. They know it's coming and love it every time they hear oops! I love giving this book to new Moms. A great gift!

 I ordered this and was super surprised by how quickly our little one responded to it. We are big on reading and she will sit by herself quite a bit, not knowing how to ready yet, but definitely recognizing quite a bit of what is going on. So Saturday morning she grabs this book and has a seat and turning each page, she keeps saying, "oh no!" as she sees what is happening with the entirely too silly turkey. It is a super easy read, cute as can be and being a board book making it pretty sturdy! Excellent purchase, I'd highly recommend for little readers.

not fond of this book. the terms/items/animals used are strange and uncommon. I also dislike u for uglier as others have noted.

We love Sandra Boynton books but this one is hard to read, flows is off and doesn’t have a cute rhyme like her other books. Illustrations are nice and we talk about the animals in the pictures and are working on identifying colors. Otherwise I’m pretty sure my 2 yr old finds this book boring.

This is a fun book for kids almost ready to learn to read. Kids don't understand what reading is initially. They think you're just telling them a story and showing them pictures. In this book, instead of reading the words, they can read the pictures. So kids can sit down and read this book themselves. And no matter how many times they read the book, the turkey keeps on making the same mistakes. Oops!

I put off reading this one for a while because I knew it would bother me a lot. I finally gathered the courage to read it, preparing myself for things I knew would haunt me until I die. I wasn't wrong. What they did to those dogs is so heartbreaking that I'm not sure how these people can even be considered human at all. But even tho this book will be hard to read, it is worth the time and tears you'll put into it. Gorant could have talked about Vick or pointed fingers or any other number of things that would have just pulled the book down. This one is about the DOGS. As it should be. And bless every single one of them and the people who fought so hard for them. They will also stay with me until I die.

Well written and I will never forget, never forget the little red dog. This book is so well written. I wish that Ron Chimelis and Obama would take the time to read it before providing their opinions to the public.Article of Ron Chimelis on allowing Vick to have dogs in the future: “ If he (Michael Vick) fails, one dog will sadly pay the price, and we will be reminded that not everyone who says they are rehabbed really is. But maybe, just maybe, he won’t fail. Michael Vick can make the case that people can indeed turn themselves around. I think it’s a risk worth taking, not just for Vick, but for us."Response to the article of Ron Chimelis:Wow. Really. It scares me that you feel you have thought this through. Please consider again. Think. Don’t be flippant. No, in fact, because he can throw a ball with accuracy, his life is Unchanged….the money is back, the fame and admiration is back, it’s all back for him.And You are ready to SACRIFICE yet another dog to these people for the CHANCE that they might NOT KILL IT?? Really? Will you stand by this dog 24 hours a day while it is in the presence of these people….these men who laughed while they hung a dog…..this man who swung a dog to the ground until its head burst……this man and his cronies who held a dog’s head under water until it drowned? All these acts take time….1 second…..5 seconds…..1 minute…….2 minutes….5 minutes…. ….all time for any of their consciences to kick in. But, Nothing. Nada. Just a life that looked to them for approval, for validation, tried to perform for them…..hurting, crying out, yelping, dying a horrible violent death. This man, personally, killed in several very cruel and heartless ways defenseless animals…READ THE TRANSCRIPT. Sure, knowing your written attitude, these were not worthy of your care….they were ”just dogs” that Vick and his unconscionable cronies trained to fight So, rather than say this man actually deserves NOT to be near animals, you would rather throw another dog INTO the RING, so to speak….with this supposed human. I have not added that we should be worried for children in this man’s presence but it carries far more logic than does yours. Because the FACT is that ANYONE with a CONSCIENCE, ANYONE with a SOUL…..no matter how they were ‘brought up’ or in what ‘culture’ (excuse # 561 and 562)…understands that HURTING AND KILLING are wrong. It is WITHIN a person. EVERYTHING ELSE is “I’m a victim’ EXCUSE.So, while he proclaims to “not be a psychopath”….this is even more illogical…really? You Want to claim that? And JUST BECAUSE HE PLAYS A GAME WELL, JUSTICE IS AND HAS BEEN VERY LIGHTLY APPLIED.And, now, you feel his chance to show his sanity, to demonstrate his rehabilitation, IS MORE IMPOPTANT than yet another defenseless being's life? You feel that risking the dog’s life will help us be more open to giving people a second chance. WE DO NOT NEED YET ANOTHER DOG’S DEATH TO DO THAT. Anyone who DOES NOT deliberately HURT/KILL defenseless living things CAN HAVE a second chance. A third chance. Anyone who DELIBERATELY HURTS/KILLS defenseless life should be in lockup away from others. Something is WRONG with them. Think. Could YOU KILL a dog? Could you swing it’s head into concrete until it burst? Could you hold its head under water as it fought for life until it suffocated from water filling its lungs? No, it goes against everything inside of you because you do not lack the something that makes you human.Think about it another way….your LACK of care for this one life, this dog that you intend to hand to this killer, maybe you could not ACTUALLY DO THE KILLING BUT YOU ARE CAPABLE AND WILLING TO HAVE IT DONE FOR YOU. By Michael Vick. Think……does this put you closer to the category which he occupies?Many people Do deserve a second chance and are willingly given it. Yet IT”S TIME to STOP PUTTING ON BLINDERS……to give the person who performed the CRIMINAL AND IMMORAL act a second chance WHEN it means putting another life directly in harm’s way? Not only is this not “fair play” but it is ILLOGICAL. WE MUST FACE IT. THERE DO EXIST SOME ACTS that deserve NO CHANCE to be REPEATED. NONE

Once I started reading this book, I was unable to put it down. The only time I put it down was to walk my two pit bull rescues. I read it in a day, and it sent me through a wide range of emotions. There were parts of the book that were very difficult to get through but necessary to understand the monsters that were eventually prosecuted. I do think the book was fair. Vick is a monster, and sorry...he's going to look like a monster even if you are just telling the story from an unbiased point of view. It shows his clear lack of remorse, not from commentary but from Vick's actions following his guilty plea (specifically his court ordered monetary payment for the rehabilitation of the dogs).It was fascinating to learn about the legal hoops that law enforcement officers were forced to jump through in the county of Surry. I was unaware of the local politics which leaned toward letting football players display open sociopathic behavior without any threat of arrest. These investigators risked their careers; they are true heroes, and it is nice to know that these tough guys have such a soft spot for our canine best friends. It was also uplifting to hear of a U.S. attorney that cares about animal cruelty. While Vick's gang was a perfect storm of monsters, the investigators, attorneys, veterinarians, legal representatives and rescue organizations that came together afterward were a perfect storm of the best of mankind.This book does make me wonder about the NFL in general. Why do we continue to reward criminal behavior with loyal fans? As football season starts, I see college kids walking around with new Vick jerseys. I try to understand that Eagles fans are a loyal breed, but do they have to wear Vick jerseys? I used to think that the Eagles organization should be ashamed of themselves, but now I blame the entire NFL organization. Vick made absolutely no effort to redeem himself following his sentence, and they rewarded him by welcoming him back. That's the negative and it is the part of this story that leads me to sometimes feel anger and disgust...on to the positive...and yes, there is a positive side to this story.One of the reasons I felt good after reading this book is that I found myself addicted to reading about the progress these dogs made outside the confines of the prison of a monster. I still am unable to think of Jonny Justice or Leo without laughing, and I'm unable to think of Sweet Jasmine without shedding a tear. At the same time I shed a tear for Sweet Jasmine, I'm so content to know that she found kindness and love in this world.One of the biggest surprises I found after reading this book was the feeling I had this morning. I walked my dogs down to the beach where I live in San Diego as I do every morning, and I thought that I would look down on them as they waited for their treats and think about how lucky they are to have a "sucker" like me as their human. Instead, I thought about how lucky I am to have them. This book left me with a peaceful feeling that there are others like me out there who devote a good chunk of their lives to enriching the lives of this sweet, goofy and loyal breed.I can't forget to point out that Jim Gorant is another new hero for me. He actually took the time to document this case, and he "gets it". There are portions of the book where he peeks into the mind of what a dog must feel, and it is touching. He also enlightens us on where the money goes with rescue organizations, and he shines a light on organizations that wanted nothing to do with saving these dogs; they just wanted a sound bite on CNN (I'm talking to you PETA!!!). Gorant is just an excellent writer; his descriptions of these dogs and their goofy behavior hit close to home with me. So Bravo Mr. Gorant. Excellent job.

This is a hard book to read - you'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll feel angry, you'll feel relief, you'll feel disbelief, and on and on. This is also a hard book to put down. I usually read it with one or both of my pit bull rescues, snuggled next to me. The legal battles that were fought while these dogs' lives were in question were never really fully covered in the news. It was amazing to learn how many of our practices changed after this case. Yes, Michael Vick and the other people associated with these horrible crimes are people I will never, ever understand - it makes me sick to think there are people like this in the world. However, it makes my heart smile to read about all the wonderful people who worked tirelessly, day and night, some for years, to help bring these beautiful dogs a better life, even if only for a short time for some of them. Read this book. Do not be surprised when there are hard parts to read - life was infinitely harder for these dogs, so your "suffering" while reading this is nothing in comparison. And when you finish the book and put it away, hug your dogs and every dog you see.
