Gringos In Paradise reads like a blog of day to day joys and aggravations in moving to Honduras and is probably similar to what gringos experience throughout Central America. I related to this book since I have visited the town where the author and her husband moved to (El Porvenir, Honduras) several times. The beginning section about leaving Hawaii dragged a bit but once they were on their way and in Honduras, it was a fun read.

I have visited Honduras over 20 times in the past 35 years and found this book to provide meaningful insight into Honduran culture and way of life. The author and her husband approached their move to Honduras with open minds and hearts, and obviously with a perspective that cultural differences should be embraced and understood, rather than viewed as "bad" simply because they are different from the way things are done in the U.S.The book is really a series of short stories that range in time from the couple's initial decision to move to paradise (somewhere), to the decision that Honduras was the paradise they sought to their day-to-day experiences - many of which are quite funny - after the move to their new home on the Honduran coast. What made the book particularly appealing was the depth of emotion and thought that went into the couple's leaving their old life and friends, interacting with new neighbors, local workers, and even their cat, who had to endure the move from the old paradise (Hawai'i) to the new.I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about visiting or moving to Honduras, as well as to anyone who wants insight as to how to approach cultural differences with an attitude of understanding and sensitivity.

I was a little annoyed by this book. The writing is amateurish at best, with lots of punctuation and grammatical errors, but the thing that really got me was the author's apparent lack of interest in really knowing and enjoying her new environment. The scene she writes of holing up in her dark, air conditioned bedroom, watching English language DVDs to drown out the noise of the Semana Santa festival party going on next door stunned me. Did she ever consider going to the party and learning about some of the customs and people of her newly adopted country? If you enjoyed this book, you'll really enjoy the other "Gringos in Paradise" book by Barry Golson.

This book never quite reached me. Too much about other things in their life and too little about honduran life

I agree fully with the other 1 and 2 star reviews. On the positive side, there are a few entertaining mini-chapters, and I'm sure the author and her husband are very nice folks, but unfortunately this book is poor overall.It's written very simplistically, and does indeed flirt with being offensive in a few condescending-sounding spots, where the author describes some of the 'simpler' aspects of the culture while admittedly not really understanding it much or trying very hard to familiarize herself with it. It comes off as a rudimentary writeup of some privileged Americans moving to a new culture with insufficient preparation or experience. It's long on personal musings about spiritual enlightenment and very short on information about Honduras and it's people.To be sure, there are a few good nuggets... but they get lost in the sauce about their cat, the other places she's been, her business, her personal habits and musings, etc.. etc.. It's entertaining in a few spots, but not my cup of tea.

Not only do I love to travel, but I love reading about other people traveling and especially from a faraway place like Honduras. With that said, this book did not let me down. It satiated my thirst for high adventure and enjoyable reading.When it comes to moving from one place to the other, I have found there are two kinds of people. The first group - I call the thinker group - analyzes every single detail down to will the new place be nicer than the one I am comfortable in now - and the second group which I call the fly by the seat of their pants group who don't think anything of just upping up and leaving and letting things fall as they may. I am unfortunately in the first group and I so envy the second group which the group I would place Malana. Oh to be able to read about doing the things I'm too fearful to do! But isn't that what reading books is all about? An escape? Learning how others did the things you're too scared to do?Such a delightful book, a pleasure to read and so encouraging for born again nomads like me! I give this book a five star rating for its content, writing style and overall enjoyment.

My initial draw to this book was the fact that it was set in Honduras. I have been to Honduras myself 7 times and when I seen this book come up for review I wanted to read about Americans who actually live there. As the book states, "Visiting a third world country is much different than seeing it as your home."I found the book a delightful look into an area I know, and found myself nodding as Malana describes what the driving is like I remember my first time there ( as a passenger in a van) I just closed my eyes I really couldn't watch! As Malana talks about not taking water for granted that is really an eye opener as well to be where you don't always have it.Chapter by chapter I laughed and felt as though Malana had literally brought my along with her. With a journal type flare, Malana shares the adventures and misadventures and I walked beside her page by page and am thankful for the journey.

I first read this book along with several others from my local library when I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. I bought this book because, as one reviewer said, Dr Vad was optimistic, but more because his 3 pronged approach to dealing with arthritis was sensible and I felt I could do it. His book is well organized and 3 years later I still refer to it.At first I found it painful to do the easiest of 3 levels of his exercise program, but eventually I got stronger. I was already taking glucosamine/chondroitin which now has been shown to help some of the people who have taken it in clinical trials. My diet was already pretty good, eating 5 fruits and veggies a day and avoiding processed foods.I wasn't consistent about following the advice in this book, but his suggestions motivated me to gradually make bigger improvements in exercise and diet. I recently started a yoga class, learning the hard way I had to do the poses gently. Doing yoga in class has made a huge improvement in my level of pain through strengthening and stretching the supporting muscles of my knee. Dr Vad adapted the exercises in this book from yoga.Last year, I had gone to a gym and hired a trainer who taught me to do floor and machine exercises. That helped but it was work, and in my 6th month of this regimen I injured my knees (without the trainer). Although everyone is different and this might be the right path for some, people with medical conditions have to be very careful exercising with machines.This book also motivated me to explore improving my diet and now I'm eating even healthier food and focusing on eating more food that help or prevent inflammation. His suggestions on supplements to take encouraged me to "get used" to green tea, ginger tea, and use ginger in some of my cooking. I added some of the other supplements he recommended, like vitamin D.All and all, Dr Vad's multiple approach to helping oneself has been very inspirational to me. The current medical environment has little to offer patients with osteoarthritis short of knee replacement. Injections and even knee replacements may help the pain, but whether or not these treatments are taken supporting muscles have to be strengthened to support the knee. This prevents more damage and pain. His advice on inflammation is also very helpful, could improve many aspects of health affected by inflammatory reactions, and really can't hurt to do them.Hopefully conventional medicine will catch up with these treatments and this approach. I definitely recommend this book for people with arthritis as a starting point to managing this condition!

The book has good nutritional and exercise information from a doctor who seems well-informed and realistic. He tells which foods help arthritis and which foods make it worse. He also tells you which activities are safe, which ones are moderate, and which to avoid. A must-have if you have arthritis. I am glad that I got it.

This book contains a wealth of information that is so useful. The dietary guidelines and exercises have made a big difference in my arthritic knee

Arthritis Rx provides education about arthritis, its progression, and treatments. What I found most helpful were noninvasive recommendations to cope with arthritis. This included suggested exercises and breathing techniques and nutritional information. Following suggestions in the book has helped reduce my pain level. The book has also given me an overview of treatments and medications. I prefer to use as little medication as possible and this book has given me excellent recommendations.

When I follow what the doctor guided me to do, I was able to move more freely with out pain. So thanks for your help.

I love this book! As the children’s director at our church and mom of four I am always looking for books that are biblically based, kid friendly and instructional to growing in a friendship with God. This book is all of the above! You won’t be disappointed!!!

This book is an amazing resource! I have been anticipating its arrival on my desk and am so thrilled to have it in my hands now. I have recently been looking for something new to use in explaining and teaching our kids on prayer. I LOVE THIS BOOK! 'God Wants You to Pray' is my current favorite section.

I love how this book gives examples of prayers for kids, along with poems and challenges. It covers prayers from the simple to the complex, the good, the bad and the ugly - the ups & downs of life. It talks about questions kids have, fears, joy, sadness, being thankful, etc.... It also has connections with real people from the Bible, along with scripture and a place for kids to write their own prayers!

This is a great way for kids (and parents) to learn to pray. A variety of people (both male and female) from the bible have a short story about a challenge they faced and how they prayed to God about it followed by a space for the kid to write their own prayer. A great resource for kids! With the help of a parent, advanced kids in Kindergarten/Preschool can benefit from the book; it is perfect for grades 1-3 to interact with on their own.

I love how it gives a note from a bible character along with a verse and a section for kids to write their own prayers. It also gives examples of how to pray and talk to God. What an excellent collection of the thoughts from babes. I enjoyed how many boys referenced how they would enjoy having Marilyn Monroe or Jane Mansfield as their mother. If you don’t know who they are, take the time and do a little research. In my day, it was Raquel Welch! When it came to a father figure, Dwight David Eisenhower was a unanimous choice. For me I’d have to say it was John Wayne.While I enjoyed many of the comments Art was able to pry out of the young minds, it was his lessons in parenting that resonated with me.The lessons he taught and the disciplinary principles he enforced on his own children are the ones I grew up with, yet have fallen to the wayside by those who deem themselves, progressive and know better. Dr. Spock comes to mind. Idiot.People today cry and complain about the current state of the United States. Our current election is a perfect example of how low our society has stooped. Yet no one, for some reason, knows how to fix it. Well, that’s because they’re as blind as bats and don’t want to be responsible for their actions. It’s always someone else’s fault. Don’t believe me? Turn on the news and find a politician from either side of the aisle that will admit they’ve made a mistake. Instead, they blame it on Congress. “But aren’t you one of those who makes up Congress?” Utter silence or plausible deniability. This thinking has crept into all facets of our daily life. If you want to stop crying and whining, then start admitting to mistakes and looking for ways to correct them.I didn’t mean for this to turn into a political debate, but that’s how strong the principles he brings up in this excellent book. I lost count how many times he would ask questions concerning God and Jesus and the children had the answer, not always what Art was looking for, ready for delivery. And, they would say they read the bible or learned about it in school. What a foreign thought for many of today’s youth.Another caveat was the background of the children he chatted with. They came from all walks of life and incomes, yet many of their answers were the truthful responses we expect from those who minds are still open and absorb every little thing they hear.If you want to find out how children think and the things we adults wish they wouldn’t have heard or seen, take the time to pick up a copy and see a reflection of our youthful years.A resounding five stars, then and now!

ART LINKLETTER WAS A ICON ON HIS GREAT TV SHOW. I REMENBER WATCHING IT WITH MY MOM EVERYDAY. IT WAS OUR FAVORITE SHOW. AND I REMEMBER OUR FAVORITE PART THE GREAT KIDS. HIS LOVE FOR KIDS SHOWED IN EVERY KID HE TALKED TO.I REMEMBER THE VERY FIRST COPY OF HIS CLASSIC BOOK I BOUGHT AT THE DIME STORE IN ALBANY INDIANA. FOR THREE DOLLARS MOM AND I WORE IT OUT I NOW HAVE AT LEAST TWO MORE COPIES OF IT. WE LOVED IT. UNITL THIS DAY IT IS STILL A FAVORITE BOOK OF MINE. I AM GOING TO LOAN THIS COPY TO A FRIEND WHO WAS TALKING OUT ART AND HIS KIDS. THE OTHER DAY SO I BOUGHT ANOTHER COPY OF IT TO LET HER READ THIS CLASSIC BOOK SHE WILL LOVE IT. LIKE IDO.

This will be a gift for my granddaughter on her birthday. During a business trip many years ago my husband sat next to Art Linkletter on a plane. Being the talker that my husband was, he came home with a signed drawing that Mr. Linkletter made for our granddaughter for her birthday. She was too young at the time to appreciate the drawing. I have had it framed and will be giving this book to her along with the drawing.

I consider this one of the funniest books ever written. Art Linkletter tells about his conversations with children on his "House Party" TV program, and the stories are pure gold. Bill Cosby hosted a show of the same name, and he was funny enough, but he tended to use the kids as straight men (or straight women, as it were) for his jokes. By contrast, Art Linkletter was the straight man, and he knew how to phrase questions so the kids would deliver the punch lines. It's an old book, but the humor is as timeless as it is priceless.

I grew up with Art Linkletter, and his book and radio/tv shows are entertainment legends. I often refer to many of his kids' comments when I speak to groups. This is typical of young kids who aren't afraid to tell it like it is.

This is a collection of stories from Linkletter's daily interviews with kids on his old House Party TV show. They were the highpoint of most episodes.I read it many, many years ago when I was about 14. Love reading it now and burst out with a laugh almost every other page. Linkletter really understood kids.Highly recommended for anyone who remembers his show and for people who live the great things that kids say.

I found a used copy of the Kids Still Say the Darndest Things and my son picked it up. He keeps telling me that he doesn't like to read. He read this book in one day, and asked me to order the one that preceded it, so I ordered KIDS SAY THE DARDEST THINGS,and he read that one in a day as well!!. It's not exactly a classic novel, but as long as he is enjoying reading, I think it will lead him to pick up other things that interest him. I would recommend this book to anyone, as there are many very humorous things that children said to Art Linkletter, and in some ways, a lot of that innocence in children is not so much there these days. It's a great family book to have around.

Art Linkletter's House Party was a staple of afternoon TV in the 50s, and one of the regular features was his interviews with young children, who were candid, sometimes embarassingly so. Linkletter's favorite question was 'What did your mother tell you NOT to say?' and of course the kids would immediately spill the beans about family secrets and other taboo subjects. This book is endlessly entertaining reading for everyone who enjoys a good laugh.
