About the Author
Thompson McCord Mayes, vice president and senior counsel at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has spent his professional career preserving old places. In 2013, Tom was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize in Historic Preservation by the American Academy in Rome, and subsequently spent a six-month residency in Rome as a Fellow of the Academy. The essays that are collected in this publication came about as a result of that experience. They were previously published in 2014 and 2015 as a series on the National Trust’s Preservation Leadership Forum Blog, http://blog.preservation leadershipforum.org.

I strongly recommend "Why Old Places Matter" . I was unfamiliar with the author until a colleague (fellow architect) suggested this book, but I'm so glad that I took the time to give it a read (and buy it!). The author juxtaposes beautiful narration with breathtaking photos that makes this tome much more than the ordinary table book. By the time that you're finished with the book you can truly answer the question: why old places matter. It left me reminiscing of all of the places that meant a lot to me. Mr. Mayes has surely earned a new fan and I can't wait to read his next offering.
Why Old Places Matter is a nice addition to your preservation/urbanism/community building bookshelf. Mayes’ format makes it an easy read. The chapters can be read as stand alone essays and are full of lovely color images of historic places. Why Old Places Matter delves into individual identity, sustainability, ancestors, and more. This is not your typical book about saving places and is not necessarily meant to be a reference guide... it is more about the heart of places, written from Tom’s thoughtful perspective.
