From the title of this book, one might expect it to be mostly about the famous fashion designer, Gianni Versace. Think again. This book delves into the life (and eventual death) of the man who shot Versace in cold blood. It takes the reader from Andrew's early days growing up in a subsection of California, attending the prominent private Episcopal school, Bishops School, in exclusive La Jolla, and moving on to trying to live the fabulous gay life he believed he deserved. Andrew learned early on how to be cared for by rich gay older men, and he relished that life. Eventually what he had wasn't enough ..... Nothing was enough. He fell into the life of S and M sex, overabundance of drugs, and still wanting more. When he felt those closest to him (in his mind) were deserting him, he decided that needed to change. This began the start of the downhill road that killed two friends, a millionaire, an innocent life in an historic cemetery, and then his final "masterpiece" . Shooting Gianni Versace outside his own home in South Beach, FL.Having been raised in San Diego, I know many of the areas Andrew hung out at. So picturing him there was fairly easy. I found this book interesting as it gave me more of an insight into who Andrew was and why he did what he did. I am anxiously awaiting the FX series that will be out soon.
I made what I'd consider to be my best good-faith effort with this book, in spite of the fact that I had a case of the creepy-crawlies midway through the introduction by virtue of Orth's stilted writing. I don't think it's deserving of charitable interpretation, as the viewpoint would have been just as reprehensible 20 years ago was it is today, but Orth's understanding of the "gay community" and "gays," as she refers to them, is seemingly filtered through a handful of individuals in highly specific social circles that she considers to representative of the "gay community" as a whole. Essentially, Orth continually paints gay men as nearly depraved and reliant upon drugs and illicit activities at all times.I'd consider a discussion of the communities in La Jolla and San Francisco to be germane; it's certainly part of Cunanan's personality makeup. But the implication Orth seems to hammer home over and over again seems to be: Cunanan, troubled as he was, was propelled by a "reckless" sort of scene that seemed almost to have brought tragedy upon itself. I could absolutely have done without gossipy asides about the sexual proclivities of Cunanan's victims, and finally just put the book down when I couldn't take another whole page of club scene descriptions in which the prose was absolutely dripping with venom and disdain.The editing's also atrocious. If you found the series intriguing and decided to follow up with the book, I beg of you: look elsewhere. You're not going to get anything new here.
I read a ton of true crime. Most of it is poorly written. “Vulgar Favors†is an exception, and boy is it fantastic. Maureen Orth’s reporting skills are unassailable; you get the feeling she interviewed every family member, friend, acquaintance, bar back, cashier, and bathroom attendant that ever crossed paths with Andrew Cunanan and his victims. Compellingly structured and executed, the author loads you up with Cunanan’s psychic turmoil and troubled, unsustainable lifestyle, and when the killings start you feel like you’ve been pushed of a cliff. Highly, highly recommended.
A lot of research went into this book by the author. She really gets into how Andrew Cunanan evolved into a serial killer. The book is really about him and not about Versace. The book is rather long, but never boring.
I saw the TV serial movie "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" and this book is what the movie is based upon. I wanted to see all the information this author had gathered through interviews and research to see what was missed in the movie. I also read that the book actually differs somewhat from the movie, as the movie was tweaked to add excitement and spice. So far the book is good, and I know it will be a good read.
Extremely detailed and thoroughly researched account of Andrew Cunanan's tumultuous life leading up to his cross country killing spree which culminated in the murder of Gianni Versace...and ultimately; his own suicide. Not for the faint of heart; but for those interested in true crime stories, this is a fascinating account. This is the book that the upcoming "American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace" is based on.
