I bought this book because I wanted a cookbook that had some history, a story of the author's reflections how it is memorable in terms of food. I love this book because it offers everything -- amazing and captivating pictures of food, the landscape and the people of the Philippines. There is an introduction and history behind all of the dishes and recipes from "Sawsawan" (dipping sauces) to "minatamis" (desserts) and "inumin"(drinks). This book gives you tips and some secrets from chefs that can make a dish extraordinary. First, I am captivated how Yasmin uses her own photography, and provides tips from her mother's cooking, other food experts and chefs from restaurants to make certain recipes extraordinary. Second, she has both Tagalog and english terms incorporated in her tips which is cool for those who are curious and interested in cooking or making these recipes. Third, the stories and related food history is short, concise and keeps you engaged reading the recipes, and very easy to follow the instructions. Fourth, very well organized and recipes are well balanced where you can find dishes that are common and others that are different but the preparation is similar. This item is a great gift to give for those who is interested making Filipino food at their own home, or give someone who is really interested cooking Filipino food for others to share. Even great for the coffee table or add this book to your kitchen library. As a matter of fact, I am buying a used version and giving it as a gift this Christmas for a friend.

Love it , beautifully made , Great pictures great recipes times spent on it , if you have one Filipino cookbook this is it .

This is a gift for my mom who is Filipino. I thought it'd be fun to get her some recipe books to remind her of home. Great pics and recipes!!

Beautiful book.

The recipes seem like they haven't been tested very well and are not very flavorful.

I am fortunate to know Yasmin. She is a not only a fantastic cook, but her research/ history of the Filipino cuisine in her book "7000 Islands" is spot on. I also love that she included family members with many of her recipes. Her book is not only filled with fabulous recipes, but a tribute to her heritage, and the history of the islands. I love this book, as I love Yasmin. It is a treasure - treat yourself to this beautiful book.

Amazing! It is an intimate look into the Philippines. I live in a different country and I am more appreciative of my native country's culture now because I miss it so much. This book is a surprise! Made me proud:)

Purchased as a Christmas gift for someone hard to buy for. I had to take a peak before giving it to them and.....stunning! It's a very thoughtful and treasured book and I would not hesitate to buy again for a friend or family member.

Great book on adventures in the Arctic. If you like this book you will also want to read the following 99 cent books on Arctic adventures:1 A Winter Circuit of Our Arctic Coast: A Narrative of a Journey with Dog-sleds Around the Entire Arctic Coast of Alaska (1920)2 Hunters of the Great North (1922) (Interactive Table of Contents)3 An Eskimo Village (1920)4 My Arctic Journal: A Year Among Ice-fields and Eskimos (1894)5 A Year with a Whaler (1919)6 By Eskimo Dog-sled and Kayak (1919)7 Forty-two Years Amongst the Indians and Eskimo: Pictures from the Life of the Right Reverend John Horden, First Bishop of Moosonee (1893) (Active Table of Contents)8 Journey from Great Bear Lake to Wollaston Land and Recent Explorations along the South and East Coast of Victoria Land (1852)9 Robert Peary's Short Narrative of His "GREAT WHITE JOURNEY" across Greenland (1894)

I enjoyed the armchair adventure aspects of this book, and the spunk and determination of the author, though some parts moved very slowly, and some lacked clarity. In keeping with the style of the day, she occasionally alluded to a situation or an emotion but refrained from spelling out the details that might cause her to look indelicate. For example, she mentioned that she was glad to find a piano in one of the houses she stayed in. She talked about other ladies taking a lesson and about singing around the organ in the evenings, but it took a number of pages for me to figure out that SHE gave the lessons and played for the sing along. Perhaps she sought to avoid conceit, but it confused me. About half way through the book she referred to herself as Mrs. Sullivan, which also surprised me. I had to go back and re-read the introduction to verify her married state. She never mentioned her husband in the narrative, which struck me as strange, and I wondered at a married woman leaving home for 18 months at a stretch. I concluded that her marriage didn't bring either party satisfaction, so they lived separate lives. These aspects give an interesting look at the social mores and expectations of the time and the changes in our society over the last 110 years, but they give the book a rather pedantic air.

I traveled the Alaska Highway last year in helping my daughter and her family move to Alaska. Since then I have read many books about Alaska including this very informative book about a woman who followed the gold seekers. I traveled with her to Dawson City and then down the Yukon to Nome when gold was discovered there. The book provided me with an insight as to the weather conditions in Alaska and what it was like to live there in the late 1800 and early 1900 time period. This had to be a brave woman to go on a journey as she did. I recommend this book for the informative and historical value that it provides.

Different, indeed. The writing is not about any one "plot' but a day to day life of a woman traveling, mostly alone, to the gold rush camps. I was enthralled. I really didnt want it to end. I am an "Alaska-holic tho. She endured so many different living arrangements and it was 'religious' without being preachy. I REALLY enjoyed it.I was wondering all through the book tho, she is married, but was traveling for 2 yrs & not once mentioned him, nor did he come to meet her at the end of her adventure. Oh well. The writing is not greae, but it was a diary she must have been taking this from. She was descriptive in her describing the scenery & the sun sets & sun rises. It was really gritty. She had to be adaptive to make this trip & live like she did.

A personal account of an 1899 trek that spans 2yrs of this brave woman's adventures and determination. She was modest, kind and perceptive. Not a fast-paced story but interesting nonetheless since it is a true account of her journey. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I gave this book five stars, because I used to live in Alaska and anything about Alaska intrigues me. The book is interesting and gives a window into the history of the early days. HOWEVER, don't buy this book thinking it has a storyline. It is Ms. Sullivan's journal and as such is a day to day account of the happenings in her life.

I've read many books about Alaska and found this one to be mediocre. Ms. Sullivan was obviously a well-heeled woman who benefited from her status. Although her travels during the gold rush period was pretty remarkable, I felt her experiences were insulated and not indicative of the norm. It was interesting from the standpoint of a woman traveling the Canadian and Alaskan frontier of the time. I would have liked more background on the author as her solo traveling didn't seem to fit with the times.

Stories of life in gold rush Alaska, told in very restrained English, by a woman who traveled there several times from the lower 48. The strength and resolve the author must have had to undertake these journeys is completely submerged under her Victorian manners; puzzling out her character makes it a fairly interesting read. I'd never have read it myself if I hadn't just moved to Alaska, compelling me to read almost anything I come across about the place. Not a page-turner by any means, would probably bore most people.
