Divorce can be just as stressful for children and teens as it is for adults. Unfortunately, most children are not able to articulate their suffering. I purchased this book for a 7th grade student after noticing negative changes in his classroom behavior and attitude towards school. When I asked him what was going on, he gave me the typical middle school boy response, "Nothing." However, with some gentle persistence and questioning, he confided he was having trouble coping with his parents' one year old divorce. I believe there's a book for almost anything that ails you, so I turned Amazon to find a book written for teens about divorce. After reviewing several titles, the student selected this one. The book arrived 2 days later. I discretely passed it to him the next day at the start of class, To my surprise, he chose to read it during our 20 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading. The best endorsement for this book is the student has read it cover-to-cover and has shared it with others. Based on this student's response, I would not hesitate to purchase this book again.

I use this book for middle/high school students going through the trauma of divorce (as bibliotherapy). It is well written and easy to understand.

This account of an Atlantic crossing by Irish poet Theo Dorgan is a joy to read. I am an occasional sailor, but this book made me want to drop everything and hit the wide ocean. If you like travel writing - even if you don't sail - do yourself a favour and treat yourself to this gem of a book.

Good yarn with abundant reflection.

A wonderfully written book of sailing, people, memory, relationships - evocative, moving, in parts so well written you have to stop and re-read the sentences. The kind of book you slow down with as it ends, because you can't bear it to be finished. The author is a poet, and it shows. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Readers are always asking me just how much of this book is true. While this novel is entirely fictional, many larger-than-life characters and "tall tales" are inspired by real people and events I encountered while flying the Alaska bush in the summer of'87. For example, in Chapter 3, Eagle & Salmon, the scene where an eagle with a salmon in its talons flies inches over the boys' heads while they're chatting on the Juneau Airport ramp, happened to me. It remains one of the most breathtaking scenes in my life. And in Chapter 22, The Sky Fell, DC faces the bush pilot's ultimate fear. That experience also happened to me, and proved to be a watershed moment in my flying career. Readers of my blog at capnaux.com will recall the true story in my post, The Sky Fell. Moreover, the way both pilots handle their emergency landings come from hours plying the Southeast Alaska skies, contemplating exactly just what I would do if faced with those situations. In another incident that inspired a subplot for this book, I did indeed fly three orphaned bear cubs. As in the novel, a poacher killed their momma sow. While those real-life cubs found homes in zoos in the Lower Forty-Eight, I wanted to spin a fun yarn exacting poetic justice on said poacher; hence, the Doyle brothers in the book. And, by the way, bear cubs really do stink to high heaven! Some minor facts have been altered to serve the story. For example, Etolin Island, not Pleasant Island, contains the Roosevelt Elk herd. I also have to confess that real-life credit for character Ralph Olaphsen's genius "volcanic" April First hoax goes to one Oliver "Porky" Bickar. A major theme that shapes this book is Alaska; the land, the people, their way of life. But Alaska's dominating trait, in this book and in real life, is the weather. In The Last Bush Pilots, Mother Nature is personified as the Ultimate Adversary, and modern day bush pilots would do well to think of Her as such. She dominates every decision we make, from how much fuel to take, what route to fly, even whether to launch or not. To that end, the most accurate scenes in this book, I believe, are the ones that take place in the air.* I may have only spent a scant summer season in that magical land called Alaska, but the lessons and impressions stuck with me for life. And inspired this novel. Enjoy!

Those who have lived in Alaska will appreciate the authenticity of Eric's writing sytle. Those who have never been to Alaska will find themselves wanting to visit (or maybe even move there). The various plots woven into the bush flying narrative are captivating - including unexpected lines such as the Casa Blanca reference.Having spent 30 years of my maritime career as an Alaska harbor pilot flying to and from jobs with bush pilots, the story line brought back many memories - and had me reliving the tension of some of those flights. Anyone inclined to push the Amazon "Buy" button for this book will not be disappointed.

I found Captain Auxler's book, "The Last Bush Pilots" an excellent read. As a pilot I can attest to the accuracy of his aviation details. He also spins a great story without bogging down his book with so many aviation details that non-pilots would lose interest. This book has everything, love, flying, and great characters. I've ordered more books written by this author and will be keeping my eyes open for future books.

I was looking to buy this book to to get a feel of what the bush pilot lifesytle was like. I enjoyed this book about 90% of the time because it scratched that itch for adventures about pilots living in the last frontier. I even liked the characters and the non flying related antics that went on (as a person that stays away from fiction, this is saying a lot) but there is one character I didn't like. It frustrated me that every time this character was mentioned, they caused so much unneeded drama and they weren't even that well developed. Why would anyone like this person or go out of their way to please them. Overall good book but you could skip every mention of this character and it would enhance the experince.

Never been to Alaska and can't imagine living there, but, for what it's worth, this story could change a person's overall outlook on Alaska.From start to finish, this is a book that is hard to put down. The character, while not many, created a certain air about them. These were seasoned Bush Pilots, sourdough, and a couple of Churchill (?) = New kids on the block.Dusty Tucker, the Boss, who shared various pearls of wisdom with DC. Next came Jake Whittaker, another knowledgeable person in all things to do with the Alaskan Bush.There are others, each that add their own quirks to the group.Mr Auxier is a pilot also, so much of what he has written comes from his own knowledge.

The author writes about flying small planes in Alaska in summer, southeastern Alaska at that. It becomes obvious in the first chapter that the author knows his stuff, and by the end of the book, you know more than you ever thought you would, or should, about Alaskan weather and how to fly in it. Or crash, as the case may be. I loved the in-depth character descriptions of the key players in this novel. I also loved how everything played out.

Loved reading about the adventures of DC as he goes from flying tourist at the Grand Canyon to Bush Pilot in southern Alaska. After watching several "reality" TV shows on Flying Wild Alaska (and similar) the characters came to life for me as I read this book. Many times felt as though I were in the plane with them. Sorry to see the book end. The plot lines seemed as though they were being retold by friends shooting the breeze while sharing a cold one. Very enjoyable. Only one plot line seemed out of place, the trucker chasing his lost girlfriend. It didn't add to the main story and distracted from the main characters.

I really didn't expect to be pulled in like that. It's a really good book and you will find yourself emotionally vested in the characters. I wish everyone had the ability to take experiences like these and turn them into a readable novel instead of just a bunch of stories.

"Mayday...Mayday". Those two words were the bait. As twisted as this might sound in the looming possibility of someone's demise I needed to find out what happened next, and so I kept reading. I was then completely hooked and reeled in. Author, Eric Auxier knows how to deliver a heart thumping beginning that shaped the foundation of this fictional story of two young aspiring pilots, Daniel C Alva "DC", and his best friend Allen D Foley. Working the skies towards getting into the big leagues, they both take on the Alaskan Bush, and whatever else "SHE" decides to dish out. This heart thumping adrenalin rush continues throughout the whole novel making it such a worthwhile purchase.Throughout you will find characters that you'll either love or hate. This tale spins the lives of "as tough as you can get & the cheechacko (greenhorn)" Alaskan bush pilots, aviation, the beauty of the land, the unforgiving weather, and the meeting of friends new and old , all woven together into one great novel. Each chapter brings on new adventures and for anyone that loves life's mystery, history, geography, humor, a little romance, danger, twists and turns that you never expected then you will highly enjoy this novel. (I must say the romance is not sappy, but has a certain edge to it).What I greatly appreciated was the author's wit, humor, and style of personal touches (as a pilot himself), that he painted throughout the book for the reader. I am no aviation buff, but what I do love is adventure, and being immersed into the characters and storyline that took me away into a unique journey I'd never imagined. This novel left me satisfied, entertained, and surprisingly enough gave me a new found admiration and knowledge of aviation, and the wild beautiful land known as Alaska or more appropriately "The Last Bush Pilots" of The Last Frontier.With that said, do I highly recommend this book? YES...completely captivating.

About the Author

Dean and Maya Jankelowitz are the co-owners of Jack’s Wife Freda, the wildly popular pair of identically named restaurants in New York City’s Greenwich Village and Soho neighborhoods. They have two children and live in downtown Manhattan. Julia Jaksic attended Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago. She cooked at several restaurants there, before moving to Manhattan to work with Missy Robins at the SoHo Grand Hotel. She became Chef of Employees Only in 2006, where she is currently Executive Chef and consultant. She works as a consultant on various restaurants in New York City, Brooklyn, and with the Jack’s Wife Freda restaurants in SoHo and the West Village. Jaksic specializes in fresh, simple flavors and slow food cooking. She learned butchering from her father, who worked in New York’s Meatpacking District in the 1970s, and is producing a documentary inspired by her childhood in butcher shops about the production of food in America. Jaksic lives in New York and Nashville, Tennessee.

So disappointed when this book arrived. This is a case of the buyer not bewaring. It was listed on some "best cookbooks in 2017" lists. I love books like this and thought I would love this too. Very ordinary recipes--like avocado toast--and a whole page on how to soft boil an egg. Also WAY TOO MANY photos of the restaurant and people in the restaurant. Giving a sense of local flavor is fine, but this is too much. I imagine people who love the restaurant may love this approach. I never return books I order online. I am returning this one.

Better than expected! Wonderful photos and all the recipes from my fave menu items, as well as beverages. Since I'm on the west coast, and can't just pop in to the restaurant, I can now whip up an impressive brunch at home.I thought this would be a paperback, but it's got a washable soft cover. Kinda like a kid's book. Love it!Thanks for the beautiful addition to my kitchen!

This is an apologetic book of sorts. The first half examines and critiques various 'small' views of God. The second presents Him as He presents Himself in the Bible and in the Person of Jesus Christ. I thoroughly enjoyed this book for several reasons. First, it reminded me of how so many people tend to think of God and why they tend to think this way or that about Him. In general, Philips argues that we think small. We make God out to be a dictator or an absentee or cruel or simply remade in our own image and subsequently flawed in one way or another. But that's on us, not on Him. We project those fallacies onto Him, even though time and again He shows us that's not His character. Second, it challenged me to think through how I talk about God with people and, for that matter, how I think of Him myself. Third, it built from the ground up a multi-faceted view of the nature of God, as represented in Jesus Christ, and what man should do in response.Practically speaking, it's not a terribly difficult read. I've read many apologetic-type books that were much less accessible to the occasional or layperson reader. Recommended.

Excellent - Excellent - Phillips in this book hits the core of all believers in their commitment to their faith. What kind of God do we really believe in? Is He the God - big enough to cover all aspects of life and all people or do we limit Him to a rocking chair - or the policeman -,etc. It should change your concept of God - I recommend this book for reading by all professing Christians.

JB Phillips was a close friend of JRR Tolkein (Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit) and CS Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia). This little book probably has had a deeper impact on my life than any other. He's not trendy and this was written many years ago, but he's wise. And it has really helped me go beyond just what I THOT I was taught and make it deeply make sense in my life. I owe this book much.

I was looking for this book for a very long time. I'd had a copy but somehow I misplaced or lost it. I remember struggling with various concepts of God and considering the understanding of God as shared with me by others. None seemed to be close enough to what I felt and all were far to limited in the context of my life in that moment. What needed at the time. This book was so on point. I'm glad I was able to find this old edition in very good shape, consdering the times & its age. Its quirky cover & Monopoly board animation just adds character to this simple message for complicated minds. If you have a puny God, stuck in a Sunday School box, or are facing down seemingly unsurmountable challenges, this book is for you!

I went to a Kelly Gallagher training session about reading instruction over a year ago, and it was, far and away, the best professional development that I’ve ever been to. It was one creative, practical, and student-friendly idea after another. I immediately read two books by Gallagher about reading instruction (Deeper Reading and Readicide--both highly recommended) and have been incorporating his ideas into my classes ever since. It was my summer goal to take a look at what he had to offer with regard to writing instruction.As it happens, Write Like This was every bit as useful as the reading books were. He offers his general philosophy of writing instruction: (1) that students need to read real-world models and write for real-world purposes and (2) that the teacher--as the best writer in the classroom--should demonstrate the decisions that good writers make before the students.He then divides the book by the six general purposes of writing and offers multiple suggestions for approaches to teaching that kind of writing. It’s easy to see how students would find these assignments compelling, and it’s also easy to see how these strategies would help the students to be better writers.My only problem reading the book is not flaw of Gallagher’s. When I read it, I keep thinking, “This is what teaching should be like. Think how much my students would grow and improve if we could just do this stuff all year.” Of course, the sadness is that the district and state standards and the ridiculous testing my students will need to pass at the end of the year will mean that I’m forced to teach something of lesser quality and distorted purposes for at least a portion of the year. So it goes. I do think that every idea I pull from this book will make my class a better experience for my students.

I'm teaching high school ELLs to write. I have felt like I am floundering around for years and then this book came my way. This is a FANTASTIC resource with tons of easy to implement lessons on real-world writing. I'm using this almost exclusively in my classroom and I have seen tons of improvement in my students writing and engagement. I can't recommend this book enough.

I discovered this book through participation at a National Writing Project summer institute. It has been really helpful in rethinking the way I teach writing in my classroom. This book has many writing activity ideas and examples.

I am not a teacher, my English is a foreign language. I've been looking for exercices or methods that would help me practice writing. This book was the answer! It is excellent, I started writing, many many many ideas to write about not only in English but also in another foreign language too! I loved the topic exercise I now have plenty of ideas to write about, I already wrote some and I can't wait to write again, it is highly motivating!

I read another book by Kelly Gallagher a few years ago, so I wanted to read this one. I'm glad I did because it offered many excellent tips in how to help students write better.His main philosophy stems from these two premises: 1. Teach kids to write in the modes that they will need to write in college and in the real world. 2. Write along with your students.Gallagher is a seasoned teacher who clearly loves writing and teaching writing. He is a good mentor to have as I try to better equip my students to improve in writing.My only criticism is that there does not appear to be a frame around all these great activities. At times, things felt jumbled.

I was pleased to see the new complete translation of Picatrix by Dan Attrell and David Porreca released in the Magic in History Series of Penn State Press. Picatrix is central to European astrological magic that it deserves an academic treatment. In addition, the willingness of Penn State Press to release a complete translation of Picatrix shows how things have changed in the past decade and the yeoman work done by mages such as Austin Coppock, Alexander Cummins and Cliff Low to delve deeply into astrological magic.As the translators point out at page 2 this version of Picatrix is, "specifically intended for students and scholars of the history of science and magic" In addition to the complete text of the Latin Picatrix in English translation the translators provide useful historical accounts of the pre-history of Picatrix and of the Latin text, Picatrix's exposition of the path of the sage, the use of the terminology nigromancia for astrological magic and the cosmology of Picatrix. Most interesting is a statistical breakdown of the types of magic in Picatrix. Finally, the translators elucidate their view of the importance of psychoactive drugs in ritual, though the translators insist at page 28 that they do not, "wish to suggest that all magic in the Picatrix can be explained away as drug addled delusion…"Coming as it does from an academic perspective, focused on history and social science the Attrell and Porreca translation provides a valuable orientation and background for the contemporary practitioner of astrological magic. No single translation can do justice to a work as complex as Picatrix and anyone who is serious about astrological magic or interested in Picatrix should certainly get a copy of the Attrell and Porreca translation as well as the Greer and Warnock Picatrix and the forthcoming Arabic Picatrix translation.

Excellent book, with a complete introduction that covers different points of view of the creation of such work of art, it can be seen that it was translated with a team of high academic preparation and knowledge on the subject. It was translated with a lot of precision, respect, professionalism and with much seriousness to the subject. The book is made with high quality and its pages are quite thick. The only mistake that I could notice and it is difficult for me not to be upset, is that they created the index and left out the chapters of each book. For me it is a gross error in comparison with other versions. It's the reason why I could not give 5 stars.
