Review
“Carl Barks... was probably the best artist and writer working in the entire field of comics. ... Ingenious, clever, and funny, the Barks Duck Books... are as readable and immediate to me as an adult as they were when I first discovered them as a child.†- Jeff Smith (Bone, RASL), Mental Floss“At this point, we're a couple years into the fantastic reprints of Duck stories by Carl Barks from Fantagraphics, so you should already know that they're some of the best comics ever printed. That's a given, right? Right. ...[T]he stories are still masterfully told and very, very funny.†- Chris Sims, ComicsAlliance“It’s Carl Barks -- pound for pound the single greatest and most influential writer in the entire history of comics.†- Alexander Lucard, Inside Pulse

Carl Barks is one of the all time great artists and storytellers in the history or comics. His stories tend to vacillate between globe spanning adventure stories and gentler stories that remain in Duckberg. Personally I favor the more benign tales and volume 9 has some of the best. We have two camping stories including Vacation Time and Camp Counselor and although Camp Counselor wasn't written by Barks it has a real Barksian feel to it. Donald's Grandma Duck was also not written by Barks but is an image of a simpler time taking place on Grandma Duck's farm. In Big-Top Bedlam the nephews decide to go to the circus in lieu of fishing but by the end decide fishing is the better choice. Today there are no travelling circuses and kids would probably be deciding between playing their XBox One and posting to facebook.I wasn't alive in the 1950's but I was alive when times were simpler than today and these stories make me pine somewhat for the past when kids actually DID choose to get outside and go fishing. Times change and people change with it but these Donald Duck stories have preserved a past that is mostly lost for good or for bad. These are the kinds of stories that can be enjoyed by readers of just about any age and I heartily recommend each volume. Here is the complete list of stories...The Pixilated Parrot (22 pages) - July 1950Uncle Scrooge gets a number reciting parrot as a gift and teaches the bird the combination to his mammoth safe. When the bird flies off Donald and his nephews travel around the world to recapture him so Scrooge can reopen his famed vault. The term Pixilated is from the definition amusingly whimsical or prankish. I, and most others probably read this as Pixelated as in composed of pixels.Wild About Flowers (10 pages) - June 1950Another battle between Donald and Gladstone Gander for the heart of Daisy Duck.Ancient Persia (22 pages) - May 1950Donald and his nephews are kidnapped and taken to Persia by a mad scientist intent on restoring to life an ancient royal family. By the end the entire world is threatened.Vacation Time (33 pages) - July 1950Donald and his nephews go on a camping trip but have to deal with a careless bully and a camera shy buck deer. Carl Barks was notoriously a big fan of the outdoors and this is probably the gem of the book but I guess 'The Pixilated Parrot' sounds like a more interesting title for the book than 'Vacation Time'.Talking Parrot (1 page) - Nov 1951 [art by Frank McSavage]Donald tries to teach a parrot to speak with hilarious results.Donald's Grandma Duck (14 pages) - July 1950 [art by Carl Barks, writer unknown]The central characters are Grandma Duck and Gus Goose until Donald's nephews show up later in the story. The story is little more than a series of short gags and misadventures on Grandma Ducks farm. Grandma Duck was first introduced in 1940 and she literally is Donald's grandmother. Gus is Donald's third cousin and actually predates Grandma having first appeared in 1939 in the animated short Donald's Cousin Gus. This is the first appearance of Grandma Duck and Gus Goose in the comic books.Camp Counselor (8 pages) - July 1950 [art by Carl Barks, writer unknown]Donald Duck is a camp counselor for Huey, Dewey and Louis with predictably hilarious results. The Magic Hourglass (28 pages) - Sept 1950The ever miserly Scrooge decides to dump a pair of worthless items including a broken down old boat and a busted hourglass by giving the boat to Donald and the hourglass to the nephews as 'gifts'. Unbeknownst to him the hourglass is magical and the source of his vast wealth. Donald and his nephews discover that refilling the hourglass with ultra rare red sand will renew its magical effect and set out on a quest to repair the artifact. It's a great story but I didn't love the fact that it established that Uncle Scrooge's success was all based on magic rather than hard work. Scrooge also reaches horrifying levels of greed. I discovered in the summary of this story that Carl Barks usage of rather bizarre and sometimes creepy looking human/dog hybrids was actually mandated by Disney. As of this story the Duck family were pretty much the only anthropomorphic characters in a city of humans.Big-Top Bedlam (28 pages) - Nov 1950Donald manages to loose a valuable pin of Daisy's and later discovers it in the hands of a member of a travelling circus. He joins the circus to get it back but the man, named Zippy, is a quick change artist and torments Donald all through the big top.You Can't Guess (25 pages) - Nov 1950Huey, Dewey and Louis want a construction set for Christmas but Donald tells that the only way they can have it is if they can guess what HE wants for Christmas. The boys wrack their brains even trying a mind reader and hypnotist. The punchline of the story requires several characters, particularly Uncle Scrooge, to act very much out of Character. However, I've always been a sucker for Bark's Christmas stories.
Grew up on these comics. Carl Barks was a fantastic story teller and illustrator. Tho a kid the first time, the 50's, the stories were educational as well as interesting and escapist. Great to revisit old friends and find the stories still interesting 60 years later.
Finally a collection deserving of one of the five greatest cartoonists and story tellers who ever lived. It's lovingly done with pages in the original comic book size, but with color that his like a HD television compared to the poorly printed originals.
You could make an argument that Barks' best art ever was on the story, Vacation Time, which was reprinted in this volume. In fact, I've never seen bad artwork from Carl Barks, just good and better. His writing is another strength, especially the careful research behind that writing. Grading the content alone, this deserves five stars. Nor would I downgrade it because it is cheaply made. As such books go, this is offered to the fans at an inexpensive price. (And kudos to Amazon for selling it at a discount off Fantagraphics already reasonable price.) So why do I downgrade this to 4 stars? There is one little thing that annoys me. Why can't Fantagraphics put the volume number on the front cover or the spine of the book? Both places would be even better! While I'm complaining about the volume number, Amazon needs to be a little more careful listing the volume number correctly. This is NOT volume 6! It is volume 9. You have to look inside the book to find this,, but it is there.
Luxurious binding, great paper, vivid colors, extras. A must have for Carl Barks fans!
Always delightful. Grandpa and granddaughter, sitting side-by-side, heads together, reading -- entranced -- Donald Duck adventures ... PRICELESS
So happy these are being reissued! I rediscovered the Christmas tale "You Can't Guess!" Which involves Dinald wanting a new car for Christmas and the kids wanting erector sets. Remember?
This book actually kept my twins focused for more than 72 miliseconds so in my book it rocks. Plus I got to give them the old "when I was your age this was our tv" speech.
