When the book arrived, I decided to scan through it and was struck by the well thought out meeting "tricks". Some caused me to laugh out loud. Some immediately brought to mind some of my coworkers and some I'm holding onto to use in my own meetings. Sarah Cooper writes with fresh honesty and gentle wit. Why did she write this book? Ms. Cooper tells you: "..because someone paid me to. But I also wrote it because I had a deadline." Oh, I "forgot" to gift this to my daughter, so looks like I'll need to order another copy.

I read this book in a day, yet I shall never shut up about it until my dying breath. It's so F&*#ING funny, and the most brilliant send-up of modern "disruptive" corporate culture published to date.You don't understand, but I'll try to explain. I have cried, multiple times, reading the same damn page. I literally laugh so hard and long that tears run down my face. This is extremely problematic, because I read it the first time at my desk at work. Cooper's writing cuts me to the quick - she's captured my experience working in software and opened my eyes to the extended f&*#ery of the rest of the corporate world.Here's the intensely subversive aspect of her book that blows my mind - I now intentionally use some of these tips in meetings, and swear to god I seem smarter. That makes up for the snorting bursts of laughter that I experience now that I see bosses and coworkers unintentionally acting out her finest work.

This is a hilarious book. It is kinda like Dilbert in that many things mentioned you have seen happen already on your modern workplace, but then she has suggestions for things for you to do that are only half tongue-in-cheek --they do have the effect of making you appear smarter in the cynical world she paints.Even though the implication is you should avoid the behaviors she enumerates, you can make use of some of these techniques yourself if you can't think of anything substantive to contribute to a meeting.I have to say this is one of my favorite books--and I read a lot of books so that's saying a lot.

Anyone who's ever worked in a corporate job will immediately love this book. Sarah's humor is biting and reads like it's straight out of HBO's Silicon Valley. Her twitter feed is also a must-follow @sarahcpr. One of my favorite little snippets is the idea of using the "royal we," like, "We really need to take a look at that issue" when you're not really involved at all. You can take credit for all the good stuff while simultaneously spreading the blame, perfect! I know for a fact I'll appear smarter in all of my upcoming meetings.

My wife and I really liked this. It makes fun of lots of things you see everyday in business meetings. But not only was it funny, there really some good examples there. Things we could use. It also made us feel better that our organizations aren't the only ones that do inane things.It is short. We felt like it could have been a bit cheaper based on the fact that we were able to read it in 20 minutes each. Overall we liked it.

I purchased this book as a gift for my boyfriend. He took it to work and read it while waiting for a meeting to start. His co-workers loved it! He then proceeded to finish it that same day. This is hands down the cleanest testing protein bar I’ve found, and I’ve tried a myriad of them. Excellent chewy texture is a bonus-it’s like eating caramel. I keep these in the freezer and bring out a few days supply. My only disappointment was that I ordered a sampler pack and all the bars were either chunkychoco pecan or coconut rage. I didn’t return the order because I live in the country, it’s too much of a diversion from real life.

The sellers is extremely helpful and kind and responds quickly to my questions that I had about the product. Definitely should purchase if you are thinking about it. Highly recommend this book.

I spent a little over three years in Japan in the US Air Force 1969-1972. While I was there I read many books about Japanese history as well as some of their popular fiction (translated into English) and found them to be quite fascinating. This book by Herbert P. Bix has been on my list for a while because of the topic as well as the author's credentials and I finally read it. All I can say is it was very thoroughly researched, well written, and I learned a lot about the Emperor's part in the events of WWII as well as why Japanese society is the way it is today. Once I got into the book a bit, momentum took over and it was hard to put down, not because it was like a thriller but because I just kept wanting to learn more. I can highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII, Japanese history, or Emperor Hirohito. A lot of the mystery is dispelled and based on letters, notes, diaries, etc of those around him. It was a great read!

In the introduction to his biography of Hirohito, Bix details some of the major challenges he had to overcome as a researcher. First and foremost, the Showa emperor did not leave behind a published memoir, a publicly accessible diary (he allegedly kept one), or much in the way of written testimony about how he felt or what he thought about events and people throughout his long life. Secondly, most of his aides and people who knew him intimately have been similarly reluctant to share their personal views of him or to disclose what they observed in the way of reactions and thoughts as they interacted with the Emperor. Thus the daunting challenge before Bix – to somehow draw a portrait of a very private, almost reclusive human being by providing rich context and relying on verifiable facts to (in most cases) extrapolate Hirohito’s state of mind, or his thought process.This is one of the strongest points of this book, from a purely scholarly point of view. Bix excels at the task of teasing meaning out of oblique statements (either by Hirohito or by his aides), out of social and political context, speeches and legal documents, newspaper reports and photographs. I enjoyed intensely the reasoning of his investigative mind, the logic he brings to bear on known events, in order to construct a very plausible, if rather disturbing portrait of Hirohito, both as a private man and as a leader. Unfortunately two major drawbacks follow from this. The first is that Bix feels compelled to overwhelm the reader with detail as he marshals evidence for his statements. Speeches, newspaper reports, even writings by Japanese scholars on a variety of subjects (for example the nature of the Meiji constitution or the meaning of kokutai) are quoted at length to the detriment of the readability of this volume. Secondly, I felt that on a number of occasions, Bix – for lack of more reliable sources – tends to attribute to the Emperor or to those around him thoughts and ideas taken at face value from his (and their) public statements. As someone who studies politics and closely follows American election campaigns, I remain unconvinced that statements meant for public consumption necessarily reflect a politician’s real opinion or reveal much of anything about their state of mind.That said, Bix makes a convincing argument that contrary to the image of Hirohito as a powerless “constitutional” monarch who had to bow to the decisions made by others, the Showa emperor gradually but surely gathered in his hands most of the reigns of the state and through both action and inaction, through voicing opinions or withholding them became, over time, an almost absolutist ruler. This, of course, meant that he was personally responsible for Japan’s wars in China as well as for the decisions to join the Tripartite Pact with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany and to, eventually, go to war with Britain and the United States.Moreover, Hirohito’s personal involvement made Japan’s war that much more savage through his refusal to countenance retreat thus impelling Japanese soldiers to fight bitterly to the end, through repeated urgings of his commanders to re-take lost territory even when that was patently unrealistic, through, ultimately, sanctioning a whole philosophy of warfare based on suicide (kamikaze) attacks.One of the most sordid aspects of Hirohito’s personality emerged as World War II drew to an end and the issue of Japanese surrender became more and more urgent. Even as thousands upon thousands of Japanese fighting men continued to die in what, at that point, had become an obviously lost war, even as the US dropped the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki causing untold destruction, death and suffering, and even as the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, the major sticking point for declaring capitulation remained, for Hirohito and the loyal sycophants around him, the preservation of the monarchy as an institution and of Hirohito as Emperor.One of Bix’s most significant contributions is to demonstrate that by clearing Hirohito of war crimes in the belief that retaining him as the Emperor will counteract a spread of Communism (this was the main idea though General MacArthur had other reasons as well), the United States prevented a thorough soul-searching of Japanese elites and the Japanese people in general on the issues of war responsibility and war guilt. Bix claims that, to a significant extent, this stunted Japanese democracy at its very inception and that it has prevented its unfettered development and expansion.Most of these arguments I found convincing and I believe Bix’s contribution to understanding Japanese history is really significant.Before I conclude, I will lay out two of the main problems I have with the book. First, despite much effort by Bix, I find Hirohito’s persona still largely unresolved in my mind. I am not sure what kind of person he was, how he treated his family, or his friends (if he had any). I remain uncertain whether the grandiose motives attributed to him by Bix (for example, trying to live up to the legacy of his grandfather, Emperor Meiji) are really valid, or if he was motivated throughout his life by nothing more than a lust for power and some sort of Napoleon complex (given his slight stature and squeaky voice). The context Bix has provides is, indeed, rich. But at its center, the Showa emperor remains largely elusive, largely a blank. Secondly, because this is meant to be a study of Hirohito, the focus on him and on the imperial institution necessarily detracts from a fuller understanding of the overall institutional context of Imperial Japan. We do not learn much about elections, or the main political parties, or anything in the way of how the Imperial Diet functioned day-to-day. We learn nothing about how the Army and Navy were constituted and how or why an institutional conflict emerged between them. In short, the figure of the Emperor is used like a lantern – it illuminates only those who came in contact with him. This makes for a rather bewildering – and unsystematic – array of personalities whom Bix introduces, but whose exact prerogatives and institutional roles remain largely irrelevant to the main narrative. In itself, that is not necessarily a problem. But given that Bix’s main thesis – that Hirohito in essence overwhelmed all other institutional constructs created by the Meiji constitution and ended up as a near absolute monarch – an examination of the institutional context of the monarchy would have been, I think, warranted.I come away from this book with a much deeper and much improved understanding of a crucial period of Japanese history. Bix has convinced me on many points of his argument and has certainly illuminated the ways in which the Showa emperor was personally responsible for much of the suffering inflicted on Asia and on his own people between 1931 and the end of the Second World War. An enthusiastic four stars!

I was born in 1938 and have good recollections of our nation at war. In 1964 I was the medical officer on a Navy ship in Guam, and the following year my wife and I spent three weeks in Japan. I didn't know that in 1963 Herbet Bix was an American Naval officer stationed in Yakusuka, where he met a Japanese girl, married her, then became a university professor, teaching in both Japan and in the USA.I had read a lot about our "Naval War in the Pacific" and Guam still had many war scars, and at least one Japanese holdout in the "boonies".I had also read that allowing Hirohito to remain emperor in Japan was tandamount to allowing Hitler to remain chancellor in Germany after the war.But this is the first book I've read written which describes the Japanese view of the war. Hirohito was a fascist dictator just like Hitler, Stalin or Mussolini, but due to the "pragmatic" views of MacArthur and the other allies, he was allowed to spread the notion he had always been a pacifist, and that he, like the Japanese people at large, were only passive victims of the "militarists".Hirohito is now long dead, but the issue of "war guilt" is still very much alive. We live in rapidly changing times, and this book is an excellent preparation for seeing what will happen next.

I am in Budapest as I write this review and the Eyewitness Travel guidebook has been invaluable. Excellent job with accessing information about using public transportation, excellent easy-to-read maps. I followed the recommendation for the Boscolo Residence Hotel on Osvat Ut. and didn't regret it. Wonderful apartment at reasonable price- great location, clean, in-unit clothes washer, ironing board, kitchen with stove and microwave, dishwasher, fully equipped. It has saved me so much money to do my own breakfasts mornings.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are the standard all other print guides fall short off.I 99% of everything on my smartphone when I travel. Still worth getting the Eyewitness guide before the trip, to read on the plane, and to stick in your pack when you tour. Site guides are often as good or better than price audio tours.

As always, these Eyewitness travel books are perfect eye candy and they provide all kinds of beautifully-illustrated details to look for in the city architecture. Their Budapest volume is no exception, full of cultural and historical detail.However, I was very disappointed to see that although it was supposedly updated in December 2012, most of the maps and directions still use the names that were changed in May 2011. There are still references to Moskva tér (now Széll Kálmán tér) Roosevelt tér (now Széchenyi István tér) on some of the maps and guides, although the big pull-out maps and part of the text have the new names.Rick Steves' Budapest is a better choice for updated information, although it lacks the gorgeous visual allure. I'm still planning on taking both books, but since now I'm concerned about the overall quality of the maps and directions in the Eyewitness Budapest, I'll use it only as an index of attractions.

Very helpful. Covers the areas of most tourists questions. Great tour book. Includes a pull out map. Provides history, which helped in advance of visiting the city, as well as traveler tips, amongst other info and recommendations.

Of all the guide books this company provides the best photos and detailed information for sightseeing. Sometimes I think they provide too much information. Sometimes excellence is more than you want when you are planning your day or walking down the street. Rick Steves is a simpler more cook book style guide that is easier to use

I bought two guide books, Prague and Budapest. The Prague book is the latest issue, 2019 and excellent, with the exception of the oreviously stated mistake on the map on page 15 that shows TWO Polands. One of them is Austria!The Budapest book is a TWO YEAR old book printed for the U.K. Proof of it is that the book price is only shown on British Poun (£).The city i formation does not change but eateries and hotels DO CHANGE.

I found this travel guide very helpful and practical during our one week-long stay in Budapest. As with all the other guides in this series I have seen and used (that is, the corresponding guidebooks on Paris, Berlin and Vienna), there is everything you need to know to plan a successful visit: abundant and easy-to use information on a good selection of sights of all kinds, including museums, monuments, churches, public buildings, famous streets, and so on; a hotel and a restaurant guide; plus all kinds of useful info on, for example, what and where to eat and drink, how to travel from/to the airport, where to shop, etc. For my purposes, I found this information (or the parts of it that I read and used) both accurate and useful.I was suspicious about the recommended restaurants section, as I had some really bad experiences when relying on the corresponding section of the DK Eyewitness Paris guidebook. But this should be no serious issue, as I found that there were no problems whatsoever in finding great food in Budapest (Paris, it seems, is mostly spoiled in this respect by the vast hordes of tourists that visit the city annually, attracted by that city's quasi-mythical status and reputation as the world's tourist attraction no. 1). Some of the restaurants we visited were mentioned in the guide, others were not (you should also note that the restaurants of Budapest are well represented on the Internet, so it might be a good idea to do some Googling before your trip to find some worthwile restaurants NOT mentioned in the guide).Visually, this is an engaging book to read, as are indeed all the other DK Eyewitness travel guides that I have read (see above). The wealth of illustrations, including the street maps and floor plans of famous buildings, really enhance this book's usability. Although many of the photographs are rather small, their quality is quite good throughout. In addition to the usual street map section, this year's version also includes a fold-out map of Budapest, which is a nice and useful bonus.Just remember to use the most up-to-date version of the travel guide, especially if you want to use the hotel/restaurant/café/bar section of the book. The other sections are more time-resistant: for example, there are lots of information about the history of both Budapest and Hungary, which gives you the necessary background info to get the most of your trip.If you are planning a trip to a big city like Budapest, you should also bear in mind that there are always a lot of more things of interest in a big city that can be included in a travel guide, however good. So keep your eyes open when roaming the streets - it is never a good idea to spend your holiday entirely "by the book"...
