Outstanding read. I was expecting a typical tell-all ghostwritten-style autobiography and instead discovered that Louise Brooks' writing is witty, intelligent and blunt in all the right places. Her prose is exceptional, her memory sharp and her descriptions almost photographic. Her brash honesty is thankfully matched by her acute analysis of the motion picture industry, Hollywood and the studio system and the people who comprised it. Fascinating work.

For someone who agreed with all the people in Hollywood who wrote her off as being "beautiful but dumb," Louise Brooks sure can write. This is a great collection of essays mainly reflecting on Louise's time in Hollywood and her observations of the ins-and-outs of the business. Fans who are looking for detailed dirt on the actress's personal life will be disappointed, as there's not a whole lot of that here...at least, not by today's celebrity gossip-obsessed standards. But this is still a great read from a former A-list actress's perspective on the early days of Hollywood. Brooks writes very honestly, and much of what she will have to say will likely surprise you. "Lulu in Hollywood" is a pretty quick read, and you'll learn a lot about the early days of motion picture history as a result of reading this.

Louis Brooks was the rare actor who could actually think, write, tell the truth, be courageous enough to resist the phoniness of filmdom.. She was so far above others in talent and ahead of her time that it makes you wonder what possible value celebrity marketing has.

After reading The Chaperone, I became fascinated with Louise Brooks. I read a biography about her, but still wasn't satisfied. This book is her own writing. It is NOT an autobiography. It is about Hollywood with chapters on various stars from her era. But through her writing, which was surprisingly good, it is easy to get a better concept of this unique woman who lived long before her time.

Louise Brooks led one of the most fascinating, self-destructive lives of any actor of the silent film era. A born dancer, and giving professional appearances in Kansas at a very young age, she joined a famous ballet group and became a top dancer before she was kicked out for a "bad attitude". Then on to Broadway rising in the ranks to be a starlette of the great revues of that time, including Ziegfield. Talked into taking a screen test in New York, she immediately was cast and, once again, shot upward like a rocket. NY movie making was quite different than the Hollywood "machine" and once forced to CA, she again rebelled at the reins thrown around her. Off to Germany to make the two greatest silents ever: Diary of a Lost Girl and Pandora's Box with director GW Pabst. Bored with Germany, she fled back to the USA, only to find herself blacklisted. She made a few non descript movies after that and only one with sound. The studios, she claimed, let out a story that her voice wasn't "good" for talkies. What a lie! Her voice is angelic as is shown by her only speaking movie made with none other than a fledgling John Wayne, fresh out of USC.After virtually vanishing for years, she was found in a terrible NYC apartment and convinced to move to Rochester, NY, home of the George Eastman House which was the inception of the largest film library in the world. Through devoted fans and despite her aggressive and often callous behavious, she began writing about her career and Hollywood, German film making and actors she knew. The result is a stunning tour-de-force and not to be missed by a "Lulu" fan. She led a wild, sexually charged life and was an alcoholic in her teens, yet she read philosophy, history, and classic literature. She was so intellectual that men were frightened of her. The rich wanted arm-candy. She was all of that, but because she had brains.Be aware, however, that highly researched biographies of Louise prove that many of her assertions of "fact" and incorrect. Either she didn't remember well or purposely chose to bend the truth a little. Still, a beautifully, lovingly written set of words. The photos alone are worth the price of the book. With her hugely copied "helmet" hairstyle and those dark, penetrating eyes and perfectly symetrical face, her beauty was unrivaled. Personally I think, in her teens to early thirties, she was the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

Love this book. Clear reading and fantastic advice. The flying exercises I have tried and improved my flying. I wish I lived in the states and could have some lessons with Jim. A lot of the advice is good even if not flying tailwheels but if you are thinking of converting I highly recommend this book. Before reading this I never really understood why a tailwheel should be harder to control (on the ground) than a noeswheel but this spells it out so clearly. I actually bought this because it is one of the few books on this subject available on Kindle but would recommend it regardless.

I liked the author's writing style, his ability to present the material in a very understandable way, and that he finishes each pertinent topic with a highlighted "Key Points" summary. Regarding Slipstream, P-Factor, Engine torque, and Gyroscopic effect, I liked the author's decision to spare the reader a detailed discussion of how these forces exist, and instead refer the reader to the FAA's "Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge". My experience with taildragger flying occurred almost three years ago and was limited to the dual instruction necessary to get my taildragger endorsement. When I get my own taildragger in the not too distant future, I plan to refer to the "Key Points" in this book before each flight until I become proficient.

Although Jim makes many great points about flying small aircraft in this book, it seemed to me that the point was made during his introduction and the following first few pages. After that, the same message was repeated over and over and over again in an 85 page pamphlet. The book would probably be about 40 pages long if the repeated phrases and rhetorical questions/statements were simply dropped.All said, I was able to pick up on a few items of interest and apply them in a practical way. I suggest the author revise the edition with a little less gab and a lot more substance on the important differences between tail wheel and tricycle gear aircraft. Jim is clearly qualified and capable of writing a better book.In all, I thought there were about 10 pages in his book that highlighted the true differences between the two different types of aircraft's handling characteristics. This was valuable stuff that I had hoped would fill the book.I am very disappointed that the kindle price is close to 10 bucks with a value of about 99 cents.Romeo SierraATP/CFI/A&P

Great explanation and instruction of tailwheel flying from takeoff to wheel and three-point landing. I highly recommend this book to any aspiring tailwheel pilot.

I suppose I was expecting a more technical treatment of the subject but instead it was a more of a flippant and superficial brain dump. This should have been distiller into a two part magazine article instead of a "book"

As a newly aquired storch driver the book has very much relavance and valuable information. having trained in a j3 cub tailwheel and then flown aircraft with the single wheel at the wrong end i needed to brush up on the technique theory particularly as my storch can fly so slow. An excellent book

Radu R. Florescu was born in Bucharest, Romania and is an indirect descendant of Prince Dracula. He received both BA and MA degrees from Christ Church, Oxford University and a PhD from Indiana University. He is professor emeritus of history at Boston College and is author of The Struggle Against Russia in the Romanian Principalities and co-author of a half dozen books on the story of Vlad Tepes, the historical Dracula. With almost a dozen books to his name, his academic work has been the subject of documentaries by The History Channel, Discovery, Canadian Broadcasting, and other international networks.Matei Cazacu received his BA and MA from the University of Bucharest and his PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris. He served as a senior researcher at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris. Professor Cazacu is the author of a few dozen books including Dracula (Tallandier, Paris, 2004), Gilles de Rais, or Blue Beard, (Tallandier, Paris, 2005), and Frankenstein (with Professor Florescu, Tallandier, 2011). A medievalist, Professor Cazacu lectures throughout Europe and has appeared in documentaries on The History Channel and Romanian television.

I wish every law enforcement organization would have this as REQUIRED reading in their training, with follow-up by a professional person with knowledge of Autism! As a parent, I used it to explain the actions of the police when they took my Autistic son into custody for shop-lifting. Fortunately, as far as I know, he was treated ok, but didn't understand that a "holding cell" was jail. He was high-functioning enough to cooperate with the personnel. Our local Autism Society chapter held a training session for all law enforcement and emergency medical personnel with a well-qualified sheriff's deputy, who has a son with Autism, from San Diego, CA doing the training, and no one showed up, which showed a lack of interest in educating themselves, so there must be training incorporated into their official training! They need to understand behaviors and comprehension levels common in those with Autism--both in males and females, which could be different. Such understanding could lessen negative behavioral reactions, making the whole situation easier for everyone. A few years ago in our county, a developmentally-disabled young man with Autism, was killed by law-enforcement personnel who didn't understand that he was unable to understand what was going on. If they'd been trained to recognize symptoms, he could be alive today. Everyone should read this book to understand the difficulties that both sides face when encountering people of all ages with Autism in a law enforcement situation.

Although I was personally disappointed in this book, I can't fault the author. My motive in purchasing it was to learn how to help someone I know well, who has Asperger's Syndrome, deal with police officers (or better yet, avoid them entirely.) Unfortunately, that book may not yet have been written. Debbault's book does help me understand how officers can and should be trained in dealing with persons with autism, and I wish such training were mandatory, since there are now many, many potential problems due to the prevalence of autism in its various forms.The author's website is probably just as helpful to advocates and higher functioning persons with autistic spectrum disorders as is this particular book. Perhaps, one day, this author will write an article for those of us with a loved one who has autism, so that we can educate him or her, for those times when the law enforcement or security person has only minimal training, but still has authority.The book does provide information to law enforcement officials in how to avoid what the author terms "unfortunate situations." Until this knowledge is more broadly disseminated, there will be too many of those situations. So, if you are a cop or know one, buy this book and pass it along.

As a mother of a four year old autistic child, I'm plagued with the worries of "what will happen to my child when I'm gone." As such, we have set up our wills and our estates to take care of him. However, there are even more practical issues to worry about that Dennis Debbaudt brings to light in his book. People with develeopmental disorders are seven times more likely to come into contact with law enforcement than regular citizens. Our autistic children are socially impared, and the ignorance of this disorder is rampant among police ranks and other "first responders" to an emergency situation. Often "autistic traits" can be mistenterpreted as drug abuse, hositlity and beliegerence, dementia, or suspicious behavior that can appear as criminal intent. People with autism have been accidentally killed in crime situations, or have given false confessions to crimes they didn't commit largely due to police ignorance of this disorder.This is a good primer for police and other first responders. It gives a good overview of why certain investigation techiques are not effecitve in dealing with autism. The second half of the book is directed at parents and caregivers - with good tips about informing local police of your child's condition, keeping your child safe at home, in school, and while traveling. There are also tips on spreading autism awareness to police and other first responders on a grassroots basis.

This was a very informative book regarding the difficulties law enforcement individuals face when confronted with what looks like "red flag" criminal behavior by individuals who are rarely in control of their behavior and who generaly do not respond to verbal commands. While written five years ago, this is still a timely topic, not just for law enforcement professionals, but for families who care for loved ones diagnosed with Autism. The perspectives of the author are definitely written from the heart as well as from a solid professional foundation. Anyone who is caring for a loved one afflicted with Autism should read this book and put into practice the recommendations identified.

This book focuses on every royal person within the extended family of Princess Alice of Battenburg. A very thick volume, it gives detail on birth, dates, relationships, and histories of several dozen relatives around Alice. The information on Alice herself is superficial due to her destroying most of her papers so the author had to interview people around her to obtain it.Alice was not deaf, but hard of hearing and was able to learn two languages early in life. Her family had her tutored so education with other deaf children was not evident. Her family had a tradition of social service and altruism, so it was not surprising that Alice devoted herself to humane endeavors after being institutionalized during a period of religious involvement when she experienced visions. One wonders if her confinement was more due to family embarrassment than psychiatric need or because of lack of medical options in those times. This resulted in separation from her family, her daughters and son, (the future Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth of England) estrangement from her playboy husband, raising of her son by relatives and missing the weddings of all her daughters. However, after her release from the institution, Alice was honored in Israel for hiding Jewish friends in her home just yards from Gestapo headquarters. When questioned by the Germans, she pretended not to understand due to her hearing. In later life she took the garb and discipline of a nun and founded her own convent, answering an inner call to service. Her declining years were spent in England living with her family. After her death, she was buried there until her body was moved to Israel for internment in the Mount of Olives as was her wish.

Alice was born in Windsor Castle, raised around Queen Victoria, her great grandmother, and lived to see her son marry Queen Elizabeth II. Often misunderstood, this book filled in many blanks: her partial deafness, living in war torn Greece as a Princess, setting up hospitals and refugee aide, breaking down emotionally, then starting a sisterhood to aide the poor, wearing a nun’s habit at her son’s wedding. Prince Phillip brought her back to live in the palace in her old age. An amazing life, the highs and the lows: she was a survivor!

Though a bit heavy on some of the details this book is an extremely fascinating look at Princess Alice, mother of Prince Philip, consort to Queen Elizabeth. She was a dynamic and very interesting woman of humble means who ended up dedicating the majority of her life to the service of others. Very good read.

Being a collector of books on Queen Victoria and her descendents, I've read quite a few. I've never read anything by Hugo Vickers before. I have to say I was pretty disappointed. I understand that the sources of information must have made it difficult for Mr. Vickers to come up with a story that could flow, but I agree with another reviewer who said that a lot of it is no more than a list of events. The first few chapters in particular seem to be just a spewing of random facts, put down in no particular order, leaping and hopping all over Europe through various families. Characters in the book are often not clearly identified. As someone pretty familiar with Queen Victoria and her family, I knew who they all were but I kept thinking that someone who didn't would have a very tough time figuring out who's who. While the family charts at the back help, with there being so many of them, often sharing the same names, it's not easy to find one name and then work out how that person relates to others. The footnotes were helpful in some cases, but often pertained to people who were far from important to the flow of the Princess' story and really didn't need the elaboration. Also, the pictures were quite disappointing. I love looking at pictures of that huge and fascinating family and find it amazing that with all the royal resources at his disposal, these were the best he could manage.Having said all that, I will give Mr. Vickers the credit for helping me get to know the life of a Princess I knew very little about before. A lot of WHAT she did is here. WHY she did it - her thought processes, emotions and motivations remain somewhat obscure to me. I understand to a degree why that is; she didn't give an interview for the book! Yet the whole thing left me with a nagging feeling that someone else could have taken the same facts, the same sources and resources, and come up with a much better book.Regarding the Princess herself, I think it's quite possible that at least some of her supposed mental illness was in fact a very real and valid exploration of spirituality that at times went off the rails. Today she would not be judged or treated anywhere near as harshly. A hard person to understand in her entirety, I don't feel this book offered all that much insight.As an irrelevant aside, her life shows something I see over and over with UK and related royal families - a tendency to constantly, endlessly travel! Some of the chapters in this book seem to just be a list of trips that Alice took: to visit, to vacation, to attend family events like weddings, funerals and sickbeds, and apparently just to not sit in one place for more than a few weeks. I suppose when you're royalty and you have other people making your travel plans and booking your transportation, taking off for a few weeks or a few days to another country is no big thing. They never seem to stop.Bottom line for me, this was a small hole in my book collection that I'm glad to have filled. I now have knowledge about a descendent of Queen Victoria I didn't have before. However, I'm also glad I paid so little for it because although there are lots of facts to learn, it's not great reading.

I found this book extremely interesting. I watched on Foxtel, ( The Queens Mother in Law ) & was anxious to read the full story of this most interesting lady. The author was meticulous in his research of all the Royals from the 1800s until The death of Alice in 1969. at Buckingham Palace.Alice had a sad background, virtually being shut out of the family for many years during her time incarcerated in a mental Asylum. How she lived the remainder of her life, mainly spent helping the needy, risking her life hiding a Jewish family during the war.She then founded her own Religious order to help those in need, & from that time wore the long grey Nuns habit, at the same time chain smoking ( Woodbine cigarettes ) She was a real character. At the end of her life all she had left in her will was 3 dressing gowns. She died in Buckingham Palace where she had lived with her family for the last 2 years of her life.Read this book, it opens your eyes to life in the backgrounds of most of European Royalty.
