His portrayal of growing up in a family with three generations in one apartment, even as he escaped into make-believe and games, seems both straightforward and complicated at the same time.Pamuk presents the City of Istanbul as seen through Western European photographs, paintings, and travel writings from the nineteenth century, and from Istanbul artists and writers, including journalists, a century later, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, as well as from his own experience of walking all over its different neighborhoods. He sees the neighborhoods falling into ruin, the mansions along the Bosphorus burning to the ground one after another, and his own family’s fortunes gradually crumbling. Against this decline and loss of pride, he sets his early love for painting, begun with a wish for praise and developing into joy of self-expression, and then reveals how he eventually chose to write instead.This book is hard to read straight through because of all the interweaving ideas, stories, and themes. But various chapters, images and passages echo and invite rereading, and as I reread, I love the book more and more. I only wish I could enlarge some of the photographs to see them in more detail.

Mr. Pamuk is a great writer from Istanbul and this book helped me understand him and Istanbul in a way that is both unique and revealing. If you are a fan of Mr. Pamuk's books, this is a good one to read, as yet another way to under the writer and his subject matters. However, if you want to learn about Istanbul and its unique, long history, please read an actual history book on Istanbul, for that, I whole-heartedly recommend Thomas Madden's book Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World. I just visited Istanbul last month, and can testify to the fact that having read both books really helped me appreciate everything I saw.

Orhan Pamuk decided to write an autobiographical account of his decision to be a writer disguised as a book about a city. Growing up in Istanbul, with a formerly wealthy family that had to move several times as their fortunes waned, Pamuk was initially inclined to be a painter. He starts by describing the city through the eyes of other painters and writers, starting with the Europeans (mostly French) who visited the city from the eighteenth century on. Later he turns to the writings of Turkish authors, mostly journalists, who document the decline of the city after the end of the Ottoman Empire. A key uniting concept for these authors is huzun (Turkish for a particular type of melancholy). Another is the difficulty of reconciling the westernizing thrust of the government policies initiated under Ataturk and the nostalgia for doing things the old way. There are also many black and white photographs of the city interspersed through the text, some by the author and mainly of the city in the 1950s and 1960s when the author was still a boy. That city was beautiful when seen from the shores of the Bosphorus but some of its neighborhoods had rotted or burnt out wooden buildings and packs of wild dogs roaming the streets. The young Pamuk grows to love these neighborhoods and spends a lot of time painting them. I read this book after returning from a trip to Turkey. It helped me to understand better the city that I experienced for a short time as a tourist. The writing here is a bit long-winded and self-indulgent but I persisted and in the end I had a good opinion of the book and its writer. My friends who read this before me said I should have started with My Name is Red. Oh well.

Lear is generally an excellent writer, but this novel has a weak storyline. Joe Heath realizes his marriage is over, but he does not realize for quite a while that his wife’s absence is because she is carrying on an affair. His uncertain journey into a new phase of life begins with a gym encounter that makes him wonder if he is now bisexual, or perhaps gay. Encounter by encounter resolves the issue, but the M/M scenes are not up to Lear’s usual ability and the story feels flat. It’s possible that Lear needs the focus of a mystery to keep his storyline tight.

At the beginning of chapter 10 of author James Lear's book WHILE MY WIFE'S AWAY he "warns" us readers "If you're looking for a happy ending full of forgiveness and acceptance, then I warn you no, you're in for a disappointment." The key word being "DISAPPOINTMENT!" I was planning on giving this book a "five star" review until the very last page of the book. Mr. Lear got lazy and didn't bother finishing the book and leaves us poor readers who have invested our time in reading 42 year old Joe Heath's story without a conclusion , nothing, zero, zilch! The only saving grace for me was that I brought this book for $1.99, not the ridiculous price he is now charging of $9.99. When it comes to Mr. Lear's books I have found that it is either a hit or miss for me as he is very inconsistent in his writing and therefore will only buy his books when they are on sale. And for some reason Mr. Lear likes to write about promiscuous men who are reckless with their numerous "anonymous" sexual encounters but feels it necessary to include a boring "safe-sex" lecture before and even during each sexual encounter...even when "Joe" is high using the drug "G" Mr. Lear makes sure to remind us readers how "safe" Joe is when having sex with a "rent boy," again BORING!

Having read nearly all of James Lear’s novels, I found this one to be a notch above his usual superlative story telling. I’ve found his novels totally immersing and the ‘action’ is accurate by my standards. This one has great character development and moved me emotionally at points throughout the book. A great read, and I highly recommend it—and all his books. For me, it takes a man to write M/M erotica on various themes and different genres. I’m sure I’ll read this novel again. Just as I have done with his other stories.

As usual Mr Lear is coming through with his man on man sex but there is an underlying thought of all the "straight" men, married, not gay -as they see it- but have an on-going hunger for man sex. The only chap that has his stuff together is an out man and Mr Lear paints a good story of him. Some wonderful descriptive portraits of a man's body, hairy parts and all and as usual, some great humor. He is by far the best erotic queer writer at present!

I am a big fan of James Lear's work. I've read most of his books. His characters are always well crafted, interesting and have great depth.Joe, the main character is hard to like at times, but that is what makesHis books so fascinating and readable. I love his descriptions of sex. Justdelicious! I can't wait for his next story!

I'm going to be honest. This book is a break from Mr. Lear's more traditional work. This is a contemporary coming of age story if you will where the protagonist finally comes to a deep understanding about himself. Well written and sexy where it needs to be, this book is a great addition to the author's work. But, honestly won't be upset if he returns to his period pieces.

I knew going it it was a cheating book. Not wholly my thing but I was hoping the story made up for it. While I love a good sex story book, I don't enjoy reading someone hopping from one dick to another and then suddenly saying I hope it lasts- the end. I can't believe I paid for this mess

I didn't think I would like this book, but the price was right. The more I read, though, the better it got. The opposite usually happens for me. Joe took me on a journey of discovery, and I with to thank the author for giving him permission to do so. I only hope that this isn't the end. Joe deserves a happy ending :)

It shortens Shakespeare's original version of Hamlet substantially without taking too much from the integrity of the original play. Some of the adultery and murder is toned down too making it more kid-friendly. A really great introductory option!

I bought this version of sequential-art (i.e., comics) Shakespeare along with a couple others. By far, the best of the set was the Classics Illustrated (not Illustrated Classics) with artwork by Tom Mandrake---he has done an excellent job of integrating Shakespeare's verbal art with comics visual art. That said, the Picture This! version seems to be more of a bland teaching tool than a work of artistry. The illustrations are uninspired and far from integrated. On the good side though, the editors for this series at least had enough respect for Shakespeare's language to include long passages of the playscript. Also, there are some helpful tips and questions (e.g., footnotes with definitions) to help students reflect on what's happening in the play.Taken by itself, it's a decent textbook. But in the context of what Shakespeare was doing, and what Tom Mandrake has demonstrated is possible, it's sadly lacking.

I homeschool 6th, 7th, and 9th grade. This book has given me a love for Shakespeare ,finally. The kids love this style of interpretation, and I highly recommend the Teachers Edition for novice teachers of Shakespeare.

I have the first edition of this book which I have thoroughly worn out; I referred to it frequently, sometimes rereading it cover to cover. I found the first edition to be the most helpful book on single, on-camera flash photography to date. Nothing else comes close; I know this, having spent a considerable amount of money on single, on-camera flash photography books. Although I'm sure there are some books out there that are as good as Niel's, for my money, Niel's instruction is as good as it gets. The second edition is a thorough reworking of the first. With a few exceptions, all of the images are new. Niel starts this edition with examples that extol the benefits of the effective use of single flash photography before heading back to the basics of exposure, flash sync, etc. He did a very thorough job in reworking the first edition, as good as that was. If you are looking to really take control of your single, on camera flash--especially for portraits--this book is the ticket. I look forward to enrolling in at least one of Niel's workshops.

This book is more nuts and bolts (more technical) than Scott Kelby's "The Flash Book" and it, as you might expect, has some different ideas than Scott's book. The title of the book is "On Camera Flash" so the author endeavors to help us understand how to use a flash mounted on a camera to get good results. It succeeds. There are many circumstances in which using off-camera flash is simply not practical. Off-camera flash produces great results, but its takes a lot of fiddling to get everything just right.If you're shooting a portrait and have time to spare, off-camera flash with reflectors, light stands, soft boxes, umbrellas, flash modifiers, etc., is a good way to go. (I note that the same author has a book on off-camera flash. I haven't read that one.) If you're trying to get shots at an event and you need to travel light and move fast on-camera flash may be the only good option. If you have an assistant you can do off-camera quickly, but assistants are not always available.The other thing that stand out as a difference between "The Flash Book" and this book is the use of TTL (through the lens) flash control. This book is more kind to TTL flash control and describes how to use the feature to good effect. It seems to me that TTL is useful if you need to shoot quickly and move on. Experience will tell.I recommend this book to photographers who find themselves in situations where on-camera flash is the best they can do and want to learn techniques for optimizing the results from on-camera flash.

Topics covered include flagging the flash to soften light, balance flash with ambient light, basic portrait lighting, metering using the in-camera histogram, and other related subjects.The books includes easy-to-understand examples and concise explanations. To get the most out of this book, a basic understanding of exposure is very helpful. A few online tutorials or videos on exposure should be enough for anyone who does not quite understand the exposure.Overall the book is an easy read and well-organized. It can also serve as a reference source. If you own a DSLR with a tiltable flash, a few hours with this book and about $3.00 in material will improve your on-camera flash photography.

I used to be an "existing light" guy. I really hated the look of direct flash on a subject. I was having a nice chat with my brother-in-law when he told me about this website called planet neil. I read through it and I was amazed by this guy who talked about using flash in such a way that viewers wouldn't know that you used flash! I bookmarked it and told myself that I would throughly read it when I finally bought my flash.That moment came a few weeks ago. I bought a 430EXII and went through the website again. It had a ad about the site's author also writing a book. I bought the book as soon as Amazon released it and poured through its pages.I was just amazed at the amount of helpful information the book had. The author, Niel van Niekerk, was really obsessed about making sure that the subject didn't look like a flash was used on her. He showed a lot of examples of how a picture would look like if only existing light was used and how the lighting was greatly enhanced by using flash.I don't know but he made a believer out of me.He never suggested this but I went to a hobby store and bought a life-sized styrofoam head so I can practice bouncing the flash while creating a flattering kind of lighting. Sorry if this sounds weird but it is so hard for me to convince my wife to practice using the flash on her.I think this book would be very helpful for people new to using flash and also to people who already has some flash experience. He uses a lot of examples from his wedding shoots but his techniques can be applied to most situations. He talks about using flash in different types of lighting situations. He does so in a manner that is not very technical. In fact, he only used 1 chart in his entire book.If you want to read a bit about what he has to say, google "Planet Neil flash photography techniques". Like me, you will be amazed at what he has to say and you will probably buy the book too.I have already finished it and I will probably read it a couple more times.One last word about the author. I had a question about a gel he mentioned in his book so I sent him an e-mail. He responded promptly and was very nice.

I don't know that any one book could ever capture the cinematic genius of Alfred Hitchcock, but this one comes pretty close, which is why it's remained in print for many years. If you want to start diving into his films as more than an average viewer, start with this one.

Read this years ago from a library book, but since we now have a collection of Hitch films on DVD / Blu-ray, was time to get a copy for home. It is illuminating to read what this gifted analyst of Hitchcock's films has to say about each film. Read that part before watching one---you'll see what I mean. Alfred Hitchcock once stated that you need to see his films more than once to get what he's doing. I do recommend this book by Spoto.

A comprehensive analysis and criticism of each of the films directed by Hitchcock from around 1925 until his death, written by an author that feels that Hitchcock was one of the few true artists involved in Hollywood film-making during the "Golden Age". This book has been revised from the original edition of more than 30 years ago, and according to the author's introduction with new information and insights. As a few people have noted, two more books have been released by Donald Spoto on Hitchcock that delve into Hitchcock's personal life . This volume has only some brief biographical information, and focuses entirely on his film output with a little background information on film casting and production. What I liked about this book is that the individual analyses were concise and to the point. Spoto is passionate and opinionated about Hitchcock's films, and he does not shrink from making bold statements about Hitchcock's intended themes and symbols. He develops a consistent pattern of criticism, and clearly expresses his ideas with extensive examples from the movies. Perhaps the language of criticism takes itself a little too seriously for the movie buff( of which I include myself), but the book avoids the type of avant-garde film theory that is fashionable among some critics.Spoto grants Hitchcock an exalted status among Golden Age directors for artistic merit, and as a scholar Mr Spoto is very precise and detailed in making his case. Despite the almost evangelical tone to the book, Spoto states in the introduction that his interpretation is not meant to be the final word on Hitchcock, or his flms. While I am not sure how sincere the comment is, it is an acknowledgement of sorts to the strong viewpoints that follow. Whether you agree with the analyses, or Spoto's contentions on Hitchcock as the artist, the book is well-written and makes for informative reading.Many people consider this one of the best and most accessible of the books on Hitchcock's films. Apparently, Hitchcock liked it so much that he invited Spoto onto the set of what would be his final film. Worth a look if you love Hollywood film, probably a must read if you love Hitchcock.

This book is great! I teach criminal justice classes at a small 4 year Liberal Arts college and found this book available through Amazon (thanks guys!). Students and even practicing law enforcement officers don't usually get the training they need in report writing not even in police academies. Our college is one of the few that teaches prospective officers of the law how to write a report that can go all the way to court. This book takes the student through the process step by step working not only on the presentation of content, but also the rather elementary aspects of spelling and grammar. This book is a wonderful text not only for the student, but for those who are already on the job. An easy read, this will be a resource you will come back to time and again. There are a few others out there as well; all are valuable tools. But there is something about Biggs' set-up of the book that has an edge over the others. Don't go to court without it!

A must have book for students or anyone working in criminal justice. Report writing is the backbone of success and a well written report not only reflects on you as an individual, but your agency as well.

this class was awesome. this book was awesome because it actually gave examples of the forms that would be filled out as an officer. I like the hands on experience i got from it.
