This book was amazing! I thought I knew the story of Benedict Arnold. I did not! This well-researched, well-written book tells the dramatic life story of a man from a once-great family destroyed by an alcoholic father who struggled with tragedies in family and love and was determined to regain the family's name and status. He was also a great patriot -- brave, daring and cunning, risking his life many times for our country. It is this heroic Benedict Arnold that makes his betrayal of his country all the more shocking. (And it is so shocking!! We see how even people on the same side of a greater issue can clash bitterly over egos, money and fame.) This story is action-packed and full of famous people, too. It sheds light not only on Arnold but the American Revolution, which was not a sterile war of muskets and powdered wigs but a war of grit, blood and tremendous sacrifice for all people. It was a very dangerous time and the politics and politicians of that day will remind you much of today. A REALLY good book for students in middle school and up who want to know more about Benedict Arnold and about American history.

Not a long book - gives a great background of B.A. as a youth and early military as well as his later life. I had no knowledge of him really and I found this fascinating. He was mentioned in "Drums along the Mohawk" (book) and he stood out as a strong military man. I had always thought of him as a cowardly traitor. It piqued my interest and I found this book. I don't think he was right to betray his country but he was not treated fairly either. Congress has not changed much, eh?

This book was clearly written with the aim of rehabilitating, to some extent at least, the image and reputation of Benedict Arnold, a man whose name has been synonymous with treason for over 200 years. This is certainly a noble effort. Just as no hero is without his bad points and deeds, no villain is without his good ones. Understanding the whole person in the context of his historical, socio-economic and personal circumstances helps to flesh out the larger-than-life figures and make them human, and thereby helps to make history itself something human and, therefore, comprehensible.Sheinkin has succeeded admirably in humanizing Benedict Arnold, delving through mountains of historical documents and other evidence to piece together a portrait of Arnold as a man, rather than the caricature we read about in history books. At the same time, he has done so in a lively, engrossing way, sure to capture the hearts and minds of readers old and young, especially boys and especially those inclined to think history is "boring". Sheinkin's subtitle, "A True Story of Adventure, Heroism & Treachery" is no embellishment. You will probably find yourself flipping through the pages of this book as avidly as you would a well-written novel. But this is no novel - this falls clearly in the category of "you can't make this stuff up."As well researched and as well written as the book is, however, I have to fault Sheinkin at least a little for failing to fully and honestly see the portrait he has painted of Benedict Arnold. Sheinkin is clearly obsessed by, almost enamored with, the historical figure of Benedict Arnold (he admits as much in his Source Notes) and it's almost like he can't bear to face the worst about Arnold. It's not that he omits or whitewashes any data that would tarnish Arnold - indeed, Sheinkin's portrayal is unflinching. It's more that he doesn't want to fully see the conclusion that he himself has come to.Sheinkin views Arnold as a historical figure who has largely been wronged by history. His final act of treachery erased all the heroic acts that went before - acts which, Sheinkin argues, rescued the American Revolution from dying a premature death. History has also overlooked the jealousies, backbiting and political intrigues which smeared Arnold's reputation, paved the path for his betrayal, and provide Arnold's motivation and mindset for the same. But time after time it seems Sheinkin overlooks (or, rather, excuses) Arnold's own contributions to his predicaments - his pugnacious personality, his utter lack of patience, his brazenness, his lack of diplomacy and social skills, and his lack of ownership of the consequences of his own rash actions. These traits combined to enable Arnold to pull of the brash, heroic deeds he did, but they don't necessarily make him a man worthy of admiration.Arnold's determined, pugnacious personality probably developed early in life when he was pulled from school due to lack of money caused by his father's drinking, after which he spend a number of years hauling his father out of seedy taverns. We also know that Arnold was involved in a number of duels in his young life, suggesting that he was always impulsive and hot-headed. One of Arnold's first military victories involved the taking of Fort Ticonderoga, but his biggest adversary was actually a man who should have been an ally - Ethan Allen, leader of the Green Mountain Boys. Both had the same objective, but they were at loggerheads because Arnold insisted he had the only real authority (from the State of Massachusetts) to take the Fort, and he wasn't about to share power. (In all fairness, Ethan Allen probably also wasn't too keen on a joint command).The next several years of Arnold's life show a brazen string of military gambits (all at least partially successful, some wildly so), coupled with an inability to get along with fellow military leaders and superiors, as well as Congress. Arnold took huge gambles, risked - and lost - a lot of men, and earned some decisive battles, including ones big enough to convince France to risk fortune and forces on this unlikeliest of ventures. But because of his uncanny ability to alienate people, Arnold was rarely given adequate credit for his role. He was passed over and delayed for promotion several times, leaving him junior to officers with less military credit to their names. There were also rumors and accusations about him engaging in less than honorable behavior, such as the accusations that he stole provisions from Montreal (which Arnold insisted he was going to pay for).All of which make Arnold a sympathetic figure, and it's certainly understandable that he would get indignant and righteously angry. But Arnold developed a bitter, devil-may-care attitude and began acting in ways that gave truth to the lies and impugned his own character. After Arnold was wounded in battle, General Washington, in one of the most spectacular errors in judgment in history, made Arnold the military governor of Philadelphia, newly recovered from the British and full of loyalist and neutral families. This position should have required great tact - not one of Arnold's strengths. Arnold began living the high life, selecting for himself the best mansion and commandeering the best carriage. He lived far beyond the means of what his salary should have accommodated and he made some questionable merchandising deals. His attitude was that he was entitled to it all for the sacrifices he'd made on behalf of his country and the lack of recognitions he'd received therefor.It's soon after this point, while Arnold is just beginning to plot his betrayal, that Sheinkin seems to come to the central core of Arnold's character:"How could he be so self-righteous? After all, he had been guilty of devious dealings in Philadelphia. And he was at that moment plotting to betray his country! But therein lies the key to understanding Arnold: he didn't feel guilty. He was always able to convince himself that what he was doing was right."Now, I'm not qualified to diagnose Benedict Arnold across two hundred years of history, and certainly not based on one book. But in modern times, we have a word for people who don't feel guilt, people who always feel like they are the victim, people who feel entitled to take for themselves with no thought of others: sociopath.Of course, Sheinkin is an historian, not a psychologist, so I wouldn't expect him to use the specific word "sociopath". But it seems like, having laid out all the data, Sheinkin ignores the conclusion, which conclusion gels the two halves of Arnold's personality - hero and villain - into an understandable whole. Men who lack guilt can be brilliant, aggressive, even audacious leaders and, so long as they are "winning", they can accomplish amazing things. But they lack many qualities which inspire personal loyalty or genuine admiration, and when events turn against them, they will seek to fill the void in fame and riches wherever it is most opportune. Given this interpretation, Arnold's protestations about doing it all for the good of the people, to end the war, comes across as hollow and false. I think history has rightfully recognized Benedict Arnold as a self-serving traitor, not as a hero forced by circumstances and belief into acts which merely seem traitorous in the eye of the beholder.As a side note, Sheinkin opens the book with an execution scene. The reader may be forgiven for assuming the condemned man is Benedict Arnold, since Sheinkin doesn't tell us otherwise. It is only later that we realize it is Major John Andre, the British officer with whom Arnold plotted to expose and surrender West Point. I think it was a bit of a cheap ploy to open the book this way, given that Benedict Arnold himself died of gout, asthma and heart failure at the ripe old age of 60, having never been captured by the Americans.Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book. It is a stirring and engaging account of a historical figure whom practically everyone knows by name, but few know by deed.

This book is actually written for young adults BUT it answered the question that I have always had about one of the worst traitors in U.S. history. It may be bad Karma but I wanted to be sure that the man suffered after his betrayal of our fledgling country as it struggled for existence. I won't spoil the ending and tell what I found out BUT it was just amazing how different the outcomes in history might have been if certain people had not done what they did. It's very entertaining, although a tad lightweight for a heavy duty reader of Our History.

Excellent insight into the actions of a man who started out as a loyal American, a patriot, a superior leader and military strategist, but was turned to the dark side by arrogant and egomaniacal peers and military superiors. I do not condone his actions, nor would I ever become an apologist for treason, but I understand how working under supervisors of mediocre talent, ability and imagination can crush all of the "better angels" of our nature.

Sheinkin's ode to Benedict Arnold was awesome! I found myself thoroughly immmersed in the world of the American Revolution, Benedict Arnold and his perplexing personality (hard worker, soldier, but also rude and self-absorbed) and the life and times of this important period in our history. The way Arnold's life unfolds will definitely interest students, teachers and reluctant readers. The author has a flair for the dramatic in painting Benedict Arnold as a young man driven to succeed, where his father failed. Arnold has passion and boldness where his soldiers and combat are concerned and he exposes himself to danger often and without thought about how he will fare. This may be a wonderful attribute but we see throughout the war, this attitude garnered Arnold enemies and those enemies plotted time and again against him. Sheinkin;s research was very thorough and he provides many primary sources and secondary sources in order to present the enigma that was Benedict Arnold. I look forward to doing more reading and research on Arnold, George Washington, and other notables during the American Revolution.

Years ago I studied at Trenton Conservatory of Music. When I reached the intermediate level, this was the first book my teacher brought me. I used it for years until I attended college. My first piano recital at the college was a Bach piece from this book. I lost the original book, moving over the years.I was happy to find it here. I ordered it and it was delivered on time. And what is best, it's even better than I remembered it. Lots of good classical pieces at a great price. If you are using the John Thompson books, when you reach about level 3, you could work in some pieces from this book. It brings back lots of memories and is as useful today to me as it was back then.

This book was recommended by our piano teacher. He has an older version and the print quality is great. I bought this book 'New' from Amazon and the book arrived likes a counterfeit one. The cover looks same as the original one. But all the pages are poorly photocopied and very hard to read. I hope the publisher,Alfred Music is aware of this problem and will fix it soon.

I'm learning to play the piano and although this isn't a beginner book It will be great when I reach this level.

Disappointing small book with very little in it

THIS BOOK IS QUITE UNIQUE BECAUSE IT HAS A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC. MINUETS WALTZES AND SONATINAS. WIDE VARIETY IS USUALLY WHAT YOU DONT SEE. REALLY AN ENJOYABLE BOOK. I HAD 8 YEARS OF INSTRUCTION AND ONLY PLAYED CLASSICAL MUSIC. THESE WALTZES ARE FABULOUS.

This collection is perfect for someone in the late-beginner/early-intermediate phase of piano instruction. The pieces are thoughtfully graded according to difficulty and address all the key issues a learner at that stage needs to work on. Advice on interpretation is provided, and the music itself is marked by the editor to indicate appropriate fingering, phrasing, and dynamics.

This has some very nice arrangements for pianists at my intermediate skill level.

Anyone interested in Law should read this book, what an honest account of the real Judicial system.

Dershowitz has become a highly controversial writer and personality for a number of reasons: he has taken on unpopular cases, he has an enormous ego, and he is an opinionated iconoclast unafraid to offer his views on Judaism, the Middle East and other political issues with the same sense of total certainty as he does when it comes to his true area of expertise: constituional law.All of that aside, he is a true legal scholar, and a great story teller (or at least he was when this book was written) and this is almost certainly his very best book. Compelling, almost riveting, Dershowitz makes the case for civil rights and constitutional defense as well ashe does anywhere else, but here he also tells a story leavened by a partial memoir of growing up orthodox in Boro Park Brooklyn in the 1960s.This is a great book, not to be missed.

The author of this book is a law professor who does appellant work part time. Unlike the cut and thrust of jury work appeals have generally been seen as dry rarefied and uninteresting. The author however writes in an entertaining and self deprecating way which brings the process alive. It is one of the most enjoyable books written about the law that I have read for some time.The author also writes about the cases he loses. So many books by advocates focus on the success and are about self grandisment.Overall the impression given is how much of a dogged slog it is to achieve justice in the American System and how much calculation and thought has to go into every strategy and move. One of the amazing things in the book is how the author is so critical of a number of judges and how willing he is to make those criticisms.It is an excellent book which shows the many flaws and weakness of the American justice system.

This book is a pleasure to read. In spite of its almost casual narrative style, the book is full of highly valuable insights into the theory and functioning of criminal justice administration. It also reveals some of the corruption of the system which, even with the alleged best intentions, destroys the essence of democracy. The cases of judicial arrogance and arbitrariness revealed by Professor Dershowitz, are enough to give one the creeps. How many defendants, who did not have the benefit of a true defense of their interests, may be pining away in prison, victims of the connivance of police, prosecutors and judges. Be that as it may, it is fascinating to see a legal mind at work, and everything explained in a manner accesible to lay people. I certainly hope the good Professor keeps on writing. We, the People, need lawyers like him.

As with all Dershowitz’s books, this one is no different. Extremely interesting, easy to read, and teaches some life lessons. A book that illuminated and entertains.

Professor Dershowitz has written an insightful page-turner that takes you through a few of his early cases. Interesting to walk through the different legal arguments made on the different cases. Disappointed to read about the somewhat rampant impropriety that prosecutors and judges engaged in within those cases. Fun read!

This is a beautiful book. Blake's illuminated works are spectacular, and Milton is one of the most impressive. The production values are every high, and the supplementary materials--the introduction, the commentary, the letter press text and the scholarly apparatus that goes with it--are invaluable. I will use this edition when I teach this poem in the future.

Try as I might, I haven't come up with the blend of radical individualism thwarted by universal awareness which would make this kind of book an intellectual treat for most people. I have read the poems by William Blake (just a few thousand lines, really) that are in this book before, and I even compared the abridged copy of his poems which I've had for years with a complete text from the library to discover what I could about the process of selection. Most of this is still a big mystery to a lot of people, and buying this book was my first attempt to get the whole picture of what a lot of professors might think about a single work, which is printed on plates numbered 1, then 1 to 8, 8*, 9 to 32, 32*, 33 to 46, then a Preface, copy B, plate 2, and even a plate f, followed by variations of the pictures which were on plate 13 and other Supplementary Illustrations. I had some trouble making out words on the colored plates, so the most educational part of the book for me is the printed text with notes from pages 111 to 217.Milton is a great figure in English literature, and the great poems which place Satan and God in a struggle that makes Adam and Eve seem like minor characters are the intellectual context for Blake's effort to write a poem using Milton to write about things that minor characters wouldn't even want to talk about. Things don't really start happening for me until plate 12, "According to the inspiration of the Poetic Genius/Who is the eternal all-protecting Divine Humanity" that Milton actually rose up and said, "I go to Eternal Death!" Don't expect to meet anyone saying such things on our streets. This attempt to be instructive in the art of self-annihilation produces one of the great intellectual puzzles of eternal questions, which attempt not to apply to a particular place and time. My appreciation of John Milton and William Blake is more concerned with their ideas than with artistic techniques. The importance of Blake was suggested, more than it was demonstrated, by Theodore Roszak in THE MAKING OF A COUNTER CULTURE, Chapter VIII, "Eyes of Flesh, Eyes of Fire," which observes that a "perfectly sensible interpretation . . . would tell us, for example, that the poet Blake, under the influence of Swedenborgian mysticism, developed a style based on esoteric visionary correspondences . . . Etc. Etc. Footnote." (Roszak, p. 239). What really impressed me was the intellectual context established in the Bibliographical Notes, at the end of THE MAKING OF A COUNTER CULTURE, which states, "Anything Blake ever wrote seems supremely relevant to the search for alternative realities." (p. 302). The radical element of that thought needs to be understood in a way that affirms the religious significance of what Blake was trying to accomplish, and other scholars might overlook how this search in Blake's work might oppose their own assumptions about our cultural inheritance. Harold Bloom, in BLAKE'S APOCALYPSE, (1963, shortly before the radical part of the sixties) said "The dark Satanic Mills have nothing to do with industrialism, but" poetically pick the most common example for why those who are bored might want to complain of "The same dull round, even of a universe, would soon become a mill with complicated wheels." (Bloom, p. 305). There are a lot of names to explain, as Bloom does in his book, and the scholars employed by Tate Gallery Publications for the production of this book display an extraordinary amount of work on this project for that purpose, and the intellectual puzzles are what remains mysterious even after learning what knowledge is available.At the heart of the poem, "Milton," is the question of what such a character might mean to William Blake, and how, long after Milton's death, he might be of some use. A lot of works have been written to give an author the opportunity to say something that he wouldn't have otherwise had a chance to say, and this book seems to be one of the unique cases of a work which tries to say something that no one else is saying. Instead of treating Milton like anyone who had been dead for more than a hundred years, the treatment of Milton's thought also supposes that it exists through an "Emanation, Sixfold presumably because he had three wives and three daughters." (Bloom, p. 308). Bloom thinks this book is a result of "a complex relation of responsibility to what he has made, though his creation is in torment because scattered through the creation." (p. 308). After John Milton had become blind, his wives and daughters represented a tremendous portion of his remaining contact with the world.Walter Kaufmann, in LIFE AT THE LIMITS, considered a sonnet by the blind Milton about a dream in which one of his wives, who had died, was seen by him "Brought back to me like Alcestis from the grave." The reality expressed in the final line of that poem, "I wak'd, she fled, and day brought back my night," seemed to Kaufmann to be "the most powerful last line of any English short poem." (LIFE AT THE LIMITS, p. 75). Blake approached this situation, in which picturing another person might be considered the strongest link with any reality, with what modern readers might consider an unctiously religious picture on plate 15, with the caption (explained on p. 139 with, "The giving up of selfhood to achieve a more inclusive sense of self is essential for the artist to create" which isn't so scary if it is only applied to artists and monks): "To annihilate the Self-[there is a foot here in the picture]-hood of Deceit & False Forgiveness." Then plate 16 starts with "In those three females whom his Wives, & those three whom his Daughters/Had represented and containd. that they might be resume'd / By giving up of Selfhood:" This poetic division of a single poet into six male-female relationships is the most surprising thing in the poem, for me. Trying to apply it to religion states a much more radical understanding of what religion has to offer than most people expect if they merely go to church, which seems to be one of Roszak's points about how our culture accepts religion by making it strictly mainstream, totally "God Bless America" as the most popular current phrase goes. Much of the scholarship on the creation of Blake's large works notes how uncommercial it was in Blake's day, as "Hayley discouraged him from anything other than `the meer drudgery of business' (p. 14)" and this book tries to make that picture perfectly clear.In one of the few small works at the end of this book, Blake complained:The Classics, it is the Classics! / & not Goths nor Monks, that / Desolate Europe with Wars. (p. 264)I feel the same way, complaining about some books, but Blake assumed a society in which people were actually being taught things like a Platonic belief in forms, and the Classics were a large element of what seemed bad to him. He might have felt differently if he ever had a chance to observe our formless void, where any claim to wisdom is highly suspect. We can only look the other way.

The editors of this great work recognize its difficulties and that it is usually only the domain of specialists. They have filled to volume it commentary, notes, and helps to try and help the general reader to penetrate aspects of this extended poem / lyric / myth. The style is so personal to Blake and so unlike any other writer's style that it is hard for most of us to make sense of what each character means in any instance. A further difficulty is that there really isn't a narrative path or plot or much to help the reader move from one moment to the next. Blake had a view of reality has so multi-layered with each being having simultaneous multiple identities and manifestations that our normal way of viewing reality is quite useless.The plates are beautifully reproduced with wonderful coloring and great images. It is a poem you can tackle as you wish, but plan on spending a lot of time thinking about it before it yields much to you.For those readers who love Blake this is a great volume to add to your collection.

I hate Blake. He and his Zoas and Los can go suck the ample breasts of Albion's emanation Jerusalem. At least Joyce (the only other person I know with this personal mythology splattered out for everyone) had a sense of humor. This guy, though. Nevertheless, the illustrations are something, and there is something in the poem, I don't know exactly what it is (nor does anyone else, regardless of how convoluted and esoteric their arguments), but I'm convinced that in order to understand the least bit of these poems, you must read them all. Study them, in fact. The notes in this version are very good, and the extra illustrations are great, particularly the painting of Adam and Eve discovering Abel with Cain running off covering his newly marked forehead. Also, there is a large Lacoon, undoubtedly Blake's best thing. (I don't want to call it a poem, painting, or even "work" for some reason).

Princeton University Press has thoroughly impressed me with this series. Using higher quality paper than I've ever seen in publishing, along with an unheard-of *six* color printing process, they have reproduced the colors like never before. In addition to the color plates, a full reprint of the text is included in typescript, as well as informed and thoughtful commentary. Well done! Too bad the hardback is out of print (or was at the time of this review).
