It's a real shame that, with the dozens of new volumes written about the state every year, so very few exhibit the winning mix of erudition, unique perspective, and engaging writing style seen here. Make no mistake, this is an important work - one that communicates the existence of a side of Florida that deserves far more recognition than it receives. Salustri clearly has an immense love for the state, and her vivid descriptions of its landscapes are a reminder that, even as alluring as are Florida's great cities, its most magnificent features lie off the beaten path. We're fortunate to have her as our guide to a fascinating world, and anyone even remotely interested in Florida - especially its less polished, more authentic corners - should buy this book and take vicarious joy in a spectacular journey.

A nice blend of Florida history and entertaining personalized stories. Makes me want to explore these hidden places and experience old Florida before it disappears. Love the author's first book!

I don't have much time to read nowadays but I make sure to read a bit of this book every night before I go to bed, it always on my night stand. That's definitely not to say it's good for putting you to sleep, but the opposite, you'll keep thinking: just one more page, please!I've got to say I also don't usually read history books, mostly because I find most extremely boring but this one has made me laugh so many times! It's got history, but it's also got interesting and random and ridiculous events mashed in with so much wit that you wont be able to help snickering a bit. I think the best thing about it is how personal it is too. You can tell how honest the author is and how she really pours heart (and her brain) out. There really should be more history books like this one!

The author follows road tours described in the 1933 WPA road guide to Florida, marking what has changed and what remains the same. In the process she gives us feel for the beauty and natural wonders of Old Florida. It makes me want to go there and start traveling these routes myself.

I gave this book to a dear friend who just moved to Florida. She loves it and has already gone to some of the places mentioned in the book.

Great book from Cathy Salustri. It makes you want to pack you belongings and travel Florida backroads right away.

I can't wait to try out some of the routes.

This is the 2015 version of a title that has been published in previous years. The new edition incorporates DSM 5 language and terminology, and much of the content has been updated. This is a hefty volume, hardcover, with just under 1000 pages. Each article includes extensive references and the Index is comprehensive.The book is divided into seven sections, each of which includes different articles. Some (like the section, 'The Basis of Addictive Disorders') is brief (four articles), whereas the section, 'Specific Drugs of Abuse' has 15 articles.Sample sections include:* The Nature of Treatment* Rehabilitation Settings* Special Populations (women, adolescents, physicians, gays, minorities, etc.).* Special Topics (Prevention, Forensics, Co-morbid Mental Illness)While the content of the book draws heavily on the research, this is not a collection of research articles, like we sometimes see in comparable volumes. Rather, the authors take their topic and tie it into what we know about the psychology, biology, and neurology of addiction.In recent months, there have been some pop-psychology books published on substance abuse treatment, which basically challenge the traditional approach to recovery. This book doesn't get into these controversies, but rather, discusses what we know about addiction treatment. Some of the chapters even reference outcome studies.Some of the content in the chapters can be a bit dense, but that is to be expected when there are discussions about opioid receptor genes, alcohol-metabololizing enzymes, and neurobiological mechanisms in the addiction cycle. Most of the content is readily accessible for mental health and medical professionals, however. For the most part, this is a professional volume and not geared toward the general public.The Appendix includes the recent classification of substance use disorders in DSM 5. It's basically a reprint of what's in the DSM, however, and doesn't provide new information/discussion.My only objection to this book is that each section plunges right into the chapters. It would be nice to see an introduction, that lays the foundation for the section goals. Good read, lots of information.

Overpriced for the size.

I have this book in hardcover. I like the content. It's well written. I had to mark it down two stars due to the (1) cost and the fact that it is not offered in an ebook format. For this amount of money I would expect ebook support. I travel for clinicals and having to haul around a book this size for referencing is a pain. I do it because the content is worth it but there's no reason in the age of the smart phone/e-readers/tablets that textbooks should not be offered in an electronic format. Educators and authors need to move into the 21st century. There are now tons of supportive software available to easily port books to an e-format. After I am done with school I will never purchase a reference text that is not also offered in my format of choice.
