This is the 2015 version of a title that has been published in previous years. The new edition incorporates DSM 5 language and terminology, and much of the content has been updated. This is a hefty volume, hardcover, with just under 1000 pages. Each article includes extensive references and the Index is comprehensive.The book is divided into seven sections, each of which includes different articles. Some (like the section, 'The Basis of Addictive Disorders') is brief (four articles), whereas the section, 'Specific Drugs of Abuse' has 15 articles.Sample sections include:* The Nature of Treatment* Rehabilitation Settings* Special Populations (women, adolescents, physicians, gays, minorities, etc.).* Special Topics (Prevention, Forensics, Co-morbid Mental Illness)While the content of the book draws heavily on the research, this is not a collection of research articles, like we sometimes see in comparable volumes. Rather, the authors take their topic and tie it into what we know about the psychology, biology, and neurology of addiction.In recent months, there have been some pop-psychology books published on substance abuse treatment, which basically challenge the traditional approach to recovery. This book doesn't get into these controversies, but rather, discusses what we know about addiction treatment. Some of the chapters even reference outcome studies.Some of the content in the chapters can be a bit dense, but that is to be expected when there are discussions about opioid receptor genes, alcohol-metabololizing enzymes, and neurobiological mechanisms in the addiction cycle. Most of the content is readily accessible for mental health and medical professionals, however. For the most part, this is a professional volume and not geared toward the general public.The Appendix includes the recent classification of substance use disorders in DSM 5. It's basically a reprint of what's in the DSM, however, and doesn't provide new information/discussion.My only objection to this book is that each section plunges right into the chapters. It would be nice to see an introduction, that lays the foundation for the section goals. Overpriced for the size.
I have this book in hardcover. I like the content. It's well written. I had to mark it down two stars due to the (1) cost and the fact that it is not offered in an ebook format. For this amount of money I would expect ebook support. I travel for clinicals and having to haul around a book this size for referencing is a pain. I do it because the content is worth it but there's no reason in the age of the smart phone/e-readers/tablets that textbooks should not be offered in an electronic format. Educators and authors need to move into the 21st century. There are now tons of supportive software available to easily port books to an e-format. After I am done with school I will never purchase a reference text that is not also offered in my format of choice.
