After seeing a lot of glowing reviews of this book from people I respect, I finally decided to read it. Let me add my own recommendation. This is just the type of book the world (and particularly the Church) needs right now. As we live in an environment that seems increasingly polarized and divided, Scott Saul's has written a book that may help us all break down barriers and begin to talk again. And he does this without asking anyone to let go of their convictions. This has more to do with stopping the trend of dividing into camps or 'tribes', letting go of the idea that someone who thinks differently is an enemy, and working toward the goal of trying to understand and empathize with those who see the world differently, even if you continue to disagree with them.As we head into what looks like yet another divisive election year in the US (possibly even more so than in the past) and face a lot of important social issues, this book can be an important part of moving toward greater peace both inside the church and in the church's interaction with the world.

This book is incredibly timely and well written. There is so much division in public arenas these days. Republican vs Democrat, Christians vs Atheists, oil men vs environmentalists. The interactions between these groups are full of bile, rancor and discord where the groups are less interested in understanding the other side and more about shouting their views. Sadly, this can be seen in the church as well. I believe there is a great host of believers that are longing for a middle road of love for others and having a deep faith, but it so often feels like there is little appetite for this in the communities around us.This books is a breath of fresh air which says not only is this loving, grace-filled space possible, but it is precisely how Jesus lived and called us to live. I so appreciated the directly applicable points by which to strive to live this more.Well done Scotty Sauls. This book is going to quickly become my go to book to give to others.

I'm wrong. You're wrong. And people on either side of the battles lines on different contentious issues are wrong too. This book challenges us to examine another way of looking at and understanding the world - the way of Jesus. It doesn't fit conveniently into a political party, hardline stance, or popular opinion.Sauls highlights where popular sides on current issues/topics each fail to align with Jesus' vision for the world, and encourages all of us to acknowledge the humanity in others, especially others who see things differently than us - while humbly admitting the hell that lurks within ourselves.

Although I don't think Scott Sauls references Leslie Newbigin specifically, Jesus Outside the Lines is a very Newbiginian book. Newbigin once said that when the gospel comes into contact with any culture (or subculture), it is always simultaneously affirming some things and critiquing others. The trick is for Christians (and church leaders especially) to discern which is which. In Jesus Outside the Lines Sauls encourages Christian toward this kind of gospel discernment with regard to the contemporary American political, cultural and moral landscape. Well applied, this will keep the church from choosing sides and instead finding some common ground with almost any group and at the same time maintaining a prophetic witness.I highly recommend this book. Our staff team read this together and greatly benefited from Sauls' cultural analysis and biblical reflection.

A life changing experience filled with many confirmations that I never expected walking outside of my cultural boundaries. This is an aspect of Jesus that I have come to know and appreciate over the last few years. Outside the lines stays next to my bed as a constant reminder of the paths that Christ walked. I am very grateful for this book. It is truly inspiring and provides a perspective that is not widely viewed except through the work of a great artist as this brother who brings Jesus into a light of Grace that is worthy of all the world to know, believe and follow!!

This book will help you in your further understanding of God's grace. You will be touched by an even greater appreciation of His love for you and all mankind, regardless of what life style they live. Then you will be moved by the depth of Jesus' tenderness in the way He seeks to develop the most amazing relationship with each of us. It will stir your heart to seek forgiveness, whom ever you are.
