I was not really familiar with the works of Shostakovich, but having been to Saint Petersburg several times and speaking with people about the siege of Leningrad, I thought the book would provide an interesting read. It more than delivered on this and I found it hard to put down. The photographs contained in this book are truly fantastic and not just a bunch of blurry indistinguishable ones. The story was both fascinating and moving, while at the same time giving me a new level of respect and appreciation for the residents of Leningrad, while showing how despicable the communist leaders truly were. It was also eye opening to learn about how this seventh symphony was played all over the world and universally understood. Even the Nazi soldiers (some of them) when they heard this symphony being played on loud speakers throughout the city understood that they would never be able to win this city, while also understanding that rather than the subhuman Slavs that they had been told lived there by Hitler that only the strongest and most human of humans could produce such music after such a prolonged siege and period of starvation. I had a SPB resident tell me this past summer about her father as a child and his evacuation from Leningrad during the siege. She spoke to me about the dangerous trip across the lake in the middle of winter. To then read about this "Road of Life" within the book in great detail, brought the earlier story I heard into much sharper detail. It was a good book that I hated to see end, although it is not a short one. After reading this book I bought the symphony to listen to and found the whole experience very enlightening after understanding the circumstances that surrounded its birth.

Wow. Seriously. Wow. This is an exquisitely written book, filled with such power and emotion that it moved me to tears on several occasions. The depth of the research and the honesty with which it is presented is impressive, and kudos to the author for this. I'm not really a huge non-fiction person, and I pretty much never read about war, but this one blew me out of the water. I don't give out five star ratings very often, but this one absolutely deserved it. The proof? Not only did I actually go out and buy the book, but I also bought a recording of the complete symphonies of Shostakovitch. I can't stop thinking about this book, even days later. Read it. You won't regret it.

Ostensibly this is a book for younger readers, perhaps for High School Advanced Placement English, Music or History students. This unassuming book however can hold its own in terms of pure scholarship. I am a subscriber to DSCH, and own every book I've been able to get my hands on on the life and music of Dmitri Shostakovitch, beginning with "Testimony", as told by Shostakovitch to Solomon Volkov and and New York Times journalist Harrison E. Salisbury's "The 900 Days:The Siege of Leningrad." A superb story teller, M.T. Anderson has created the most fully integrated book on Shostakovitch life & times thus far. There are those who consider Shostakovitch to be Gustav Mahler's heir apparent as master of the Symphonic form. We can only wish that someday a writer will come to the fore such as Henri-Louie de LaGrange did for the life & music of Mahler, & will write the definitive book(s) on Shostakovitch. For readers young AND old, Anderson's book will breath life into the story of this tormented soul who was the 20th Centuries most versatile composer.

M.T. Anderson is one of my favorite authors ever, young adult or otherwise, serious or silly. His "Feed" changed my entire perspective on our online world — and I was 42 at the time — and his "Jasper Dash and Flame-Pits of Delaware" is still one of the funniest books I've ever read. When I saw that he had written a book about one of my favorite composers ever, I one-clicked that puppy faster than you can blink. I was not disappointed.I knew the general story of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, of his composing it during the Siege of Leningrad and what a splash it made across the world at the time, but Anderson presents an unbelievably detailed history of Shostakovich's early life in Leninist Soviet Union, Stalin's brutal reign, the war and the siege, and through it all, Shostakovich's composition of his huge 'war' symphony. It's a complete picture of an utterly foreign world to us, and Anderson brings it all round to the importance of art/music and how it keeps us human even in the worst of times. I was very sorry to see the book end.

I am a classical music lover and I thought this book was outstanding. The author provides the background of what is going on in Russia as it impacts on composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. I had no idea of the torments the Russian people went through as things in the country went from imperial rule to that of Lenin and then Stalin. In America, we hear much about the persecution of the Jews by Germany, but not about the thousands of Russians who were starved, sent to labor camps, tortured, shot, etc. The City of Leningrad was under siege for over a year while bombed and blockaded by the Germans. Shostakovich's 7th symphony (the Leningrad) was played all over the world and even by an orchestra of starving musicians within the city. It brought feelings of solidarity and hope to those who heard it.

I strongly recommend "Why Old Places Matter" . I was unfamiliar with the author until a colleague (fellow architect) suggested this book, but I'm so glad that I took the time to give it a read (and buy it!). The author juxtaposes beautiful narration with breathtaking photos that makes this tome much more than the ordinary table book. By the time that you're finished with the book you can truly answer the question: why old places matter. It left me reminiscing of all of the places that meant a lot to me. Mr. Mayes has surely earned a new fan and I can't wait to read his next offering.

Why Old Places Matter is a nice addition to your preservation/urbanism/community building bookshelf. Mayes’ format makes it an easy read. The chapters can be read as stand alone essays and are full of lovely color images of historic places. Why Old Places Matter delves into individual identity, sustainability, ancestors, and more. This is not your typical book about saving places and is not necessarily meant to be a reference guide... it is more about the heart of places, written from Tom’s thoughtful perspective.

Great writer. Read the book in the library and renewed it. I am not gonna tell you what experiments I did, but I have 11 semesters of college /pr/post grad chem and a home lab. His book on elements is awesome, but I think he totally underated copper and argon/

This book was the perfect gift for two of my grandnephews who absolutely loved it. My niece claimed her son stopped opening presents after he opened it and wandered off into his room to begin reading it right away. They had to call him back to finish opening presents Christmas morning!

My son loves Theodore Gray's books. They are easy to understand without being over simplified. Lots of illustrations. If you have an interest in science, especially chemistry, give Theodore Gray a good look.Note, I don't have any connection with Theodore Gray or received any compensation for this review. This is how I really feel.

My son laughs out loud while reading this book and always wants to share what he's learning. It's got great illustrations and the author is intelligent and funny. Highly recommend!

Compared to etching, for example, engravers have delicate and direct control over line weight, which Piranesi used to good effect in wispy skyscapes, dank prisons, and everything in between.All that said, I'm greatly attracted to only a fraction of his prodigious body of work. It all displays technical skill and mastery of form, with impeccable draftsmanship. Much of it, especially details of architecture, comes across schoolbook-dry and without feeling. I know that's completely appropriate to many venues and it's good to understand his most expressive work in the context of these more staid if technically flawless pieces - I still don't respond to the latter the way I do to the former.None of that takes away from the crisp, bright Taschen treatment. It's a beautiful book, and I'm not a bit ashamed of calling out favorities among the hundreds of engravings reproduced here.-- wiredweird

Although this is a heart wrenching story, I could not put this book down. The simple fact that human trafficking exists is horrible. Her story is both compelling and sad.

This is an awesome read and informs other what to watch for in human trafficking. At first I wasn't sure but I want to thank everyone who was involved in making this happen. I didn't realize there was so many.

We're fortunate to have her as our guide to a fascinating world, and anyone even remotely interested in Florida - especially its less polished, more authentic corners - should buy this book and take vicarious joy in a spectacular journey.

A nice blend of Florida history and entertaining personalized stories. Makes me want to explore these hidden places and experience old Florida before it disappears. Love the author's first book!

I don't have much time to read nowadays but I make sure to read a bit of this book every night before I go to bed, it always on my night stand. That's definitely not to say it's good for putting you to sleep, but the opposite, you'll keep thinking: just one more page, please!I've got to say I also don't usually read history books, mostly because I find most extremely boring but this one has made me laugh so many times! It's got history, but it's also got interesting and random and ridiculous events mashed in with so much wit that you wont be able to help snickering a bit. I think the best thing about it is how personal it is too. You can tell how honest the author is and how she really pours heart (and her brain) out. There really should be more history books like this one!

The author follows road tours described in the 1933 WPA road guide to Florida, marking what has changed and what remains the same. In the process she gives us feel for the beauty and natural wonders of Old Florida. It makes me want to go there and start traveling these routes myself.

I gave this book to a dear friend who just moved to Florida. She loves it and has already gone to some of the places mentioned in the book.

Great book from Cathy Salustri. It makes you want to pack you belongings and travel Florida backroads right away.

I can't wait to try out some of the routes.

This is the 2015 version of a title that has been published in previous years. The new edition incorporates DSM 5 language and terminology, and much of the content has been updated. This is a hefty volume, hardcover, with just under 1000 pages. Each article includes extensive references and the Index is comprehensive.The book is divided into seven sections, each of which includes different articles. Some (like the section, 'The Basis of Addictive Disorders') is brief (four articles), whereas the section, 'Specific Drugs of Abuse' has 15 articles.Sample sections include:* The Nature of Treatment* Rehabilitation Settings* Special Populations (women, adolescents, physicians, gays, minorities, etc.).* Special Topics (Prevention, Forensics, Co-morbid Mental Illness)While the content of the book draws heavily on the research, this is not a collection of research articles, like we sometimes see in comparable volumes. Rather, the authors take their topic and tie it into what we know about the psychology, biology, and neurology of addiction.In recent months, there have been some pop-psychology books published on substance abuse treatment, which basically challenge the traditional approach to recovery. This book doesn't get into these controversies, but rather, discusses what we know about addiction treatment. Overpriced for the size.

I have this book in hardcover. I like the content. It's well written. I had to mark it down two stars due to the (1) cost and the fact that it is not offered in an ebook format. For this amount of money I would expect ebook support. I travel for clinicals and having to haul around a book this size for referencing is a pain. I do it because the content is worth it but there's no reason in the age of the smart phone/e-readers/tablets that textbooks should not be offered in an electronic format. Educators and authors need to move into the 21st century. There are now tons of supportive software available to easily port books to an e-format. After I am done with school I will never purchase a reference text that is not also offered in my format of choice.
